Jody Mulik is a member of the Johnson-Wyandotte County chapter. She came down with a fever at the age of 7 and went to the doctor where she learned she had Optic Atrophy, which attacks the optic nerve, and was diagnosed as legally blind. She then went to the Kansas State School for the Blind for four years where she learned how to play the piano. Jody learned Braille over one summer, which made her able to return to her original school. She then graduated from high school and got her associate’s degree two years later. Jody worked in the Pizza Hunt call center for eight years. Her mother then came down with Alzheimer’s, so she became her mother’s caregiver. She met her future husband Don at Alzheimer’s support group meetings. They discovered they went to the same elementary school and started dating. They married in 2018. Prior to COVID-19, Jody was a weekly volunteer pianist at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. Jody and Don are instructors for a support group called iCare at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Overland Park where they also Braille all the reading materials for Mass. Jody says she is glad she and her husband joined the NFB of Kansas to help others who are blind live the lives they want.
