Good evening fellow NFBK advocates,

We are almost at the finish line. We have but one step left to go to bring our blind parents Bill of Rights into reality and onto the statute books of Kansas. We now need to contact Governor Kelly and ask her to sign the bill. If you are confused by the change of numbers, this is because senate bill 276 was merged onto senate bill 343 during a house senate conference committee process on April 1.

To reach Governor Kelly’s office by phone, call (785) 368-8500. Then dial 6 to connect you to a staff member. You may opt to send an email to the governor at
govevents at ks.gov
Be sure too mention SB 383 in the subject line. In your message, whether by phone or by email, you might say something similar to the following

My name is ____, from ____ Kansas, and I am urgently requesting the governor to sign senate bill 343 which passed unanimously in both the Senate and the house. This bill will give Blind parents in Kansas the tools and procedural safeguards we need to combat discrimination in domestic court cases, juvenile court matters, Guar Foster care, guardianship, and public and private adoptions. Parents in Kansas and elsewhere have lost their children or have had a threat of losing their children simply because they are blind and not because of actual capabilities. I will be very grateful if the governor signs Senate bill 343.

Sincerely,
Name, address, city, state, ZIP Code
Though we know of no reason why the governor would veto the bill, it is best to leave nothing to chance. Thanks to everyone who has pitched in and advocated for the bill up to now.

Best regards,
Rob Tabor | first vice president/legislative Director national Federation of the blind of Kansas
