I got this from Don Olson and NLS. If you have the Talking Books Skill then you may find this of interest.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the first official edition of the NLS smart speaker tip of the week. For the next few months, NLS will be sending a tip about using My Talking Books.

I realize I sent an email to this list last week about browsing and searching. I feel it’s worth sending more information about this, especially since quite a few people have joined the list since last Friday.

Before getting started, many of us know there are a number of wake words we can use to get the attention of our smart speaker. In this post, we’re going to call her “Lady A” in order to make sure that people using screen reading software will not unintentionally activate their speaker.

This week’s tip is specifically about searching the BARD collection on My Talking Books.

You can search for books by title, author, subject, series, annotation, book number, genre or by narrator. The following list contains examples of the various search types.

Say, “Lady A, books titled Little Women”

Say, “Lady A, search for books by Tom Clancy”

Say, “Lady A, find books about war”

Say, “Lady A, find books about music genre Jazz”

Say, “Lady A, read books with number DB12345”

Refining a Book Search:

When searching for a book, it is possible to add further details to help refine the search. Once you have made your original search, for example, “Find books by Dr. Seuss”, and your Smart Speaker has returned a list of results, you may expand on the query. Say, “About fish.” Remember, you may interrupt your smart speaker at any time. You do not need to wait until it finishes speaking. If the speaker is, for example, listing books by Dr. Seuss, and you know you want books about fish, you may interrupt by saying "Lady A, About fish".

One last thing to consider is searching by the title and author. For example, say, “Lady A, books titled A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens”. This will help narrow your search My Talking Books will give you a much shorter list of titles to choose from than if you simply search by the book title.

There are often multiple ways to perform each function on My Talking Books. For a more comprehensive list of commands to perform a search, we recommend exploring the following resources:
