As with the national level of NFB, we deliberate a number of resolutions under a process that takes place in 3 steps during the convention. On Friday evening at 7:00pm, the NFBK resolutions committee will meet to mark up and take action on each resolution presented to it . On Saturday the committee will give its report which consists of a reading of each resolution as finalized by the committee with a statement of the committee’s action, e.g., do pass or do not pass. Finally the convention takes action on Sunday on an up or down vote on each resolution.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Q: Now that I’ve outlined the resolutions process, what is a resolution? <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A: A resolution is an official statement articulating a change of public or business policy as it pertains to blindness and may involve other disabilities as well. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Q: How should a resolution be written? <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A: Each resolution consists of at least one Whereas clause and at least one Be It Resolved clause. The Whereas statements form the justification and reasons why we advocate for a specific change of public or business policy on the subject of the resolution. The Be IT resolved language states the change of policy we are asking for. The NFB national web site at <a href="http://www.nfb.org">www.nfb.org</a> has numerous examples of resolutions that have been adopted at past national conventions. Simply type “resolutions” in the search edit box of the NFB web page and follow the links.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Q: Does my resolution have to be exact to be considered? <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A: No, but do try to make your ideas as clear as possible. The first job of the resolutions committee is to wordsmith each draft resolution to make its language as clear and concise as possible so that our desired change of policy is clear to those on the receiving end. Succinctly stated, the worst thing you can do is to have a great idea for a resolution and keep it to yourself.
