Regardless of how one feels about the treaty, I have to say very candidly that we had it coming for Republicans to vote against it. They see no love lost because of the widespread perception if not the mathematical reality that most registered voters with a declared disability register themselves as democrats. IN other words, this kind of outcome is the price we pay for putting our eggs in one basket. Blind and other disabled Americans find themselves in a political no-mans land in which one party’s legislators snub us because we won’t support their candidates at election time, and the other party ignores us or gives us lip service support at best because they know they can take our votes for granted. Perhaps the blind and disabled are as bipartisan as any constituency in America, but if that is true it seems we need to start getting more willing to show our bipartisan colors in the state house and on Hapitol Hill. However, it would position the United States to support extending across the globe the rights that Americans already enjoy at home.
