First, that a drop in applications means ALL of the money should be taken away is faulty thinking. That's still over 4,000 (by his count) who are still unemployed. VR is notorious for employing quick and easy fixes to pad their stats; quick and easy = spending little money and with no thought to length of employment. That is, if a person holds a job for only a week, it is still a successful empoyment outcome for the books at VR. You know how that works, Rob: "We got him employment, right? We're not responsible for what happens after that." Even so, the stats used are only for those who <em>asked</em> for help: by whose count? This stat says nothing about employment. yet Donnelly equates it to this. </span><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino;"> This kind of logic--we got 5,000 employed, so it's cool to let the other 4,000 wallow--is the kind of logic the anti-STD protectionists used with condoms to help prevent HIV: "Well, they're only 90% effective, so it's useless to use them." Duh! </span><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino;"> That keeping the program going would require State input is not our problem, that is Brownback's problem as he stole the Dept of Ed's money to begin with. He is required to replace it by law (KS Supreme Court decision). Donnelly and Brownback are writing off one of the most vulnerable of state populations in order to lessen the load of his debt, debt (again) incurred illegally. <br /> This is cooking the books. This is number crunching. This is a logical fallacy. It is illogical to maintain that since only 5,000 people have asked for help, that any disability employment problem is solved. That leaves 4,000. That's 40% of the total. <br /> There are many of us who would rather attempt to do it ourselves, rather than get involved with an agency with a not-so-good reputation in this respect, much less just a state/federal agency. Some of us will, thus, cease looking rather than get lost in the system or spend months and years and multiple counselors that only result in failure. And here the numbers fail again: if I get involved and it requires multiple applications and multiple counselors, that's actually ONE application (assuming I don't change my name), right? Or am I being too stat cynical? (Oh, what a pun there, Rob!) <br /> But this number crunching is what Brownback uses to get rid of programs he doesn't believe in--and in this case it's an attempt to save his ass. He sets up the game so it becomes difficult to access or attain the services in one way or another and then uses the expected lower numbers to mean less need of the program (or the people) and therefore it's right and mete to dump the program. Not "enough" people need it. <br /> He is also compounding--if you go beyond the quoted numbers--employment in its totality with employment in the disability community. Koch industries, the largest employer in Kansas, does not believe in State or Federal aid of any sort and would not be in the market of hiring the disabled. There are all sorts of ways the Kochs (another pun, Rob) can manage to nix the possibility of hiring people who are something less than abled. DISabled = not abled. [The two officers below Col. George Washington--he was not a general until election time--were the reasons he won any battles: one had one arm, one had one eye. You might say that the United States owes it existence in part to the functioning of DISabled people.]<br /> All in all, ludicrous.<br /> If I can vote by proxy, you know where I stand.
