Hello Jessica:
Welcome to the list and best of luck with your internship.
I did my field work in the late 1970s and readers were all that was
available. Luckily volunteer readers were available and issues of
confidentiality were addressed between the volunteer and myself. Depending
on your field placement the confidentiality issues may differ. I currently
work in a Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Center that is a part of a larger
hospital; the hospital has an active volunteer department and all of the
volunteers have been pre-screened and informed of confidentiality issues
prior to our talks. Luckily, most of our records are computer based. Once
I had access to the forms database I have been able to read charts. The
only accommodation I required was an accessible computer - and to have
someone come by and write some fairly simple JFW & WE scripts to make the
system more accessible. For the most part I now use fellow workers to read
the occasional hand-written note or messages.
