[humanser] home visits

This is fantastic advice! If you need to transport clients, then it is
acceptable to have a driving requirement. If not, or if there is just the
off chance that client transport is part of the job, then this requirement
is ridiculous. So, when you get the feel for the jobs you'd like, apply
anyway, as long as driving is not essential to the job. They might argue
that doing home visits makes driving essential, but this is not the case.
You can possibly take public transportation, depending on the city, and/or
hire drivers, some might even be volunteers, to take you where you need to
go. Most agencies pay for mileage, so it really doesn't matter if you are
driving the vehicle, your driver should be able to be paid that money for
the miles he or she drives for you.
Good luck!
Melissa

Before deciding not to apply simply because of a drivers' license
requirement, be sure that driving, not simply being able to get from place
to place on your own, is actually an essential function of the particular
job. Many years ago, my city mental health department was requiring a
drivers' license for all positions. When I asked whether they really
intended to eliminate all blind people and many epileptics who were
otherwise qualified, they quickly backed off and invited me to apply. As
the positions in which I was interested involved doing outpatient
psychotherapy sitting in a chair, there was absolutely no reason to require
a drivers' license; the therapists drove no one but themselves.

I have not conducted home visits within my professional experiences but also
would benefit from knowing who is traveling to people's homes, how it works
and how traveling and transporting clients within a Case Management capasity
works for those of you doing that.  I am still looking for a job (over 6
months) and fear the worst because I am avoiding applying to most CM jobs as
it is a requirement that you have a valid Class D Wisconsin Driver's license
and good driving history.  I know there is much discussion around this topic
but I would really appreciate any insight.

Warmly,

I need to know about anyone doing home visits as part to their jobs.  It is
extremely important.
Each day is a precious gift

Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for your advice.
I'm a computer programmer, but this occupation became a torture sinse I had
to switch to the screen reader.
I currently possess M.S. in Mathematics and teaching.
I would like to work with people rather than with the computers.
I would be happy to work as a rehabilitation or addiction counselor, or
something similar. But I cann't spend 2 years getting a degree in
psychology, I'm not that young any more.
My question is - where to acquire the necessary skills as soon as possible?
I'll really appreciate your advice.

Sincerely,
Anna
