Hello Sue-Ellen,
I'm so sorry to hear of your struggles finding a job! Please know that many
on this list have been where you are, and some are still searching like you.
This is a horrible economy, which making a job for anyone very difficult.
As far as the drivers license issue... This can only be a
requirement by law if driving is truly an essential function of the job
itself. For example, a taxi driver needs a license because he or she must
drive a taxi in order to work. Many times organizations say you need a
drivers license because "at times" you will need to transport someone, or
"at times" you will need to do home visits. There are many ways around
actually having a drivers license, and you can certainly discuss these with
a potential employer. You can hire a driver. You can go with a coworker,
when practical, to home visits etc. You can have coworkers do transporting
of kids and you can take on some other just as important task that needs to
be done for the agency. So, even if they say you need a license apply
anyway. You may want to try to contact the employer ahead of time to see
why a license is needed, and if it truly is a function of the job. I'm sure
others will have things to say about this as well.
The best of luck!
Melissa

Subject: [humanser] Employment

I am getting so frustrated with trying to find a job. There are so many
jobs in the Human Services field that require a Driver's License. I want to
work with children and adolescents. I have a Master's degree in School
Counseling from Johns Hopkins University that means nothing right now. I am
a member of Chi Sigma Iota (Counseling Honor Society). Does anyone have any
ideas about what employers I should look at? I am willing to learn anything
that I have to learn to do a job. I would be the most loyal employee they
had ever had. I am very dedicated and hard working. I am very detail
oriented and organized. According to the USAjobs.gov website, the Social
Security Administration doesn't have any open positions. There are no
positions listed on the USAjobs.gov website for the Social Security
Administration. At a recent NFB meeting in Baltimore, a member said that
she was hired for a job with the Social Security Administration that she did
not apply for. I wish I could be lucky enough to get a phone call from an
employer who wanted to hire me. I have been looking for a job since
January. Any help would be appreciated!
