[humanser] seeking music therapist mentors

Hi Ashley,

I have volunteered with two separate agencies in the past and continue
to do some music enrichment as part of my university's music therapy
club, (which your friend should definitely consider joining if his
school has a chapter as well).

The one I've worked with the most is the Cincinnati Association for
the Blind and Visually Impaired. They have a great early intervention
program which includes a music program directed by one blind and one
sighted music therapist. I volunteered throughout my four years of
high school; a background check was not needed for this one, but I did
take volunteer training and was a former client of the agency myself
so those could have been factors that weighed out the background
check. Last summer I also volunteered for another non-profit agency
which primarily served teens and young adults with developmental
disabilities. Most of the time I assisted in adapted guitar and piano
classes for teens/young adults, and I helped accompany on their fall
open house concert. I also served as a councelor for a day camp for
children who if memory serves me correctly were between the ages of 8
and 12. In my university's music therapy club I have helped lead
music enrichment sessions for nursing home residents, teens with
developmental disabilities who attend a non-profit art program, and
patients at a local children's hospital. Any volunteer experiences
along those lines would be great for your friend. Other places such
as homeless shelters and community centers might be good places to try
too.

for the most part confidentiality isn't an issue, provided that your
friend is sensitive to what information should and should not be
shared. Typically this is best avoided by not using a client's name.
For example, instead of saying, "I worked with Joe Schmow today, he
has Cerebral Palsy," he could say, "Client J has Cerebral Palsy."
Most volunteer agencies will explain what information can and cannot
be shared, and will let their volunteers know if they need to keep
hipa in mind for medicare/medicade or any other confidentiality
requirements. Overall, the best principle to follow is that if
something sounds even remotely private or like it should be held
confidential, then it is best to be cautious and treat it as such.

Hope this helps and I will keep you informed if I find any new information.
