[humanser] INTERNSHIPS

My field placements were in the late 1970s and changes have happened in the
field.

In Brooklyn I traveled by bus, subway and white cane throughout the county.
In the City few folks own private autos, so my travel was by the usual ways
most folks traveled. In one neighborhood a youth walked with me saying, "We
know you're undercover, a blind white guy walking around here?"

Thanks so much for sharing that, JD. While you were at your 2 placements in
Boston, exactly what tasks did they have you doing?
When you were at your job in NYC doing home visits, how did you get around
to the homes?

Thank you again.

I did my 2 years of field work or internship in Boston, a few years ago at
Boston University. I found the public transportation met my needs. I was
placed in Waltham at a mental health program for children and at a skilled
nursing facility in Boston. Neither required me to travel; but, I don't
feel that I had a stellar field experience.

Later working in New York City, the job involved many home visits and this
was a major factor in my learning curve. People are quite different in
their home environments; however my travel experiences were a challenge.

Now I am working in a hospital based psychiatric clinic and it is good.
