Amy,
Welcome; I'm also career searching; now my focus is in a
communication/clerical type position. but I'm considering human services and
have not ruled out a masters program. So, I'm on here to learn about various
fields and their challenges.
Like you, I have a BA but in liberal studies for me; basically a degree
completion program where you pick two concentrations, and one for me was
psychology. I changed my major from education for many reasons.
Like you, I desire to make a positive impact on those I reach and help
people with their quality of life.
The career search is so tough.
I'm echoing others but will add some more.
If you want to work directly in psychology, you need a masters in the mental
health field.
But, if your goals are like you indicated without being a therapist, getting
a job with a BA should be doable.
I suggest looking into working in nonprofits or hospitals; you could
facilitate activities or manage cases.
Do you want to work with kids? if so, after school programs may be able to
use you. I know such programs are part time, but if you start part time, its
easier to find a full time job since you get experience and references from
your current job.
I'd do case management but thus far nonprofits around here ask for a MSW
usually.
To get around the masters, some jobs may allow you to substitute with
experience. So while job hunting, do volunteer.
To get around the drivers license, if it asks for the license, just put your
state ID number in the box; if interviewed, explain you'd use public transit
assuming you have that.
I'll add that finding a job with a BA in psychology is challenging for all,
not just us. Often its networking and being at the right place at the right
time.
Ashley

Subject: [humanser] Questions
Hello all.my name is Amy and new to the list. I have a few questions and
hopefully I will get some answers. I graduated with a bachelors degree in
psychology. When searching for jobs I have noticed some of them that I am
interested and require either a valid drivers license and/or a Masters
degree. If it is not one or the other, sometimes it can be both are
required. Is there any way around any of these requirements?
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I would love to hear back from
anyone and to meet people to discover what my options are with a degree in
psychology. My main goal with the degree is to help people, change and make
a positive difference and impact on the lives of others.
