Something doesn't seem right. You have had much good support and
information here. I think you are on the right path and should not let them
treat you as they are. I do have some things I wonder about.
Was there a change in staff? If so they might not be aware you were able to
record in the past. That is the only plausible reason for them to do this.
Now I didn't say they were right in their actions at all. If no staff
change, then I don't know what to say. Glad you are standing up to them and
doing so respectfully and properly. You have our support. I had a
situation at a job where I was sabotaged in a meeting. It's a big learning
situation and not one you want to repeat. I brought in my vr counselor at
the time who was in a wheelchair and had no use of any limbs due to post
polio. I got my way. I think they just don't want to be caught doing
something disrespectful, illegal and just mean. I don't see why picking
your own notewater or recording is any financial impact on the business.
Neither costs them anything. When you provide your own notetaker, you
choose someone you trust . The notetaker/friend will be able to give great
info later on the visual stuff like smirks, glances, confusion and such you
couldn't see plus accurate notes. I can't see how your recording as in the
past is any significant financial problem unless they are trying to fire
you. It's still illegal to treat anyone this way. Litigation isn't cheap
so they ought to do the right thing in the first place. I wonder if they
are making a mountain of something that they wouldn't talk to any other
employee about. The employer wouldn't want proof of that getting around. I
don't like the idea of other staff writing up the notes. They must do as
directed and most likely are picked to paint the boss in a good light.
Anything can be said but incriminating things from the meeting can be said
"off the record". I’m glad you are pushing them to do the right thing. I
trust you are keeping a paper trail of correspondence, verbal communication,
etc. "just in case." I hope this doesn't go far and you are given logical,
reasonable accomodations. They wouldn't want to be in a meeting where
everyone else is reading braille would they? It goes both ways!
I hope this doesn't ruin your weekend. Happy Decoration Day weekend all.
Ericka
