Hi, Dr. Chappell, Did you use a standard scanner, or did you use a
program like Kurzweil, Open Book, or Fine Reader for OCR?
I am wondering if your PDF file was tagged properly or if tags need to
be inserted. I would also suggest making sure that you choose the
"infer reading order from document" option when opening the file.
Below is a link to a 2-part webinar that I found to be super helpful
in understanding how to navigate PDF's and maximize their
accessibility. I received the following summary and resource from Dan
Burke:
PDF files are ubiquitous in college and professional life, and are
cumbersome and troublesome at best for screen reader users. More
importantly for us to keep in mind is that PDFs are not all created
equal. In any case, the more familiar you are with PDFs and how to
use them, the more efficient you will be at managing and getting at
the content they contain. You will also be more independent and
self-determining.
Goals:
1. A working knowledge of PDF types
2. an array of tools with which to manipulate PDFs and
extract the necessary content from them with as little effort and time
as possible
3. Know at least three (3) ways to convert PDFs and have an
idea of which one to use as your default
1. Freedom Scientific's free webinar on PDFs with JAWS, two parts:
PDF Document Reading and Strategies with JAWS and MAGic
(Note: This is a two-part webinar. The first is
pretty basic, but it is an excellent review and even I picked up a
couple of tips about JAWS & PDFs I didn't know or had forgotten.
Also, it's critical to know how to manipulate the Accessibility
Wizard.
