[humanser] My Huffington Post Article

Yvonne,

Your article is an excellent example of simple ways we can change what it
means to be blind. I like what you said about refraining from grabbing
anyone. I like your point about universal design.

For future articles consider researching NFB's philosophy toward blindness;
"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not what holds
you back...". I would also consider sharing a brief explanation why we use
the word blind; it's respectable to be blind, and we don't say persons with
sight... I might point out the benefits of audible singles and how helpful
curb cuts can be. It merits mentioning that hundreds and thousands of blind
individuals cross intersections alone without the helpful secondary cues. I
might even give examples of universal design access. I think the biggest
point I might make is to point out what we know to be the obvious. Blindness
doesn't mean diminished mental capacity, or aspiring to reap the benefits of
government assistance. Again, overall, your article reflects your drive and
your ability to think outside of the box. Way to go!

From,
Lisa Irving

Thanks for your kind words. I agree it is better to be proactive and really
it would only take some very small changes to make things so much easier for
the blind. That is why I made the suggestion for including a blind person.
I did not know about the document, but I am not sure really how to put the
link into the article at this point. However I will keep the link for future
use.

Thanks again and I hope that many sighted people read my article, Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
Great article. The NFB has a small but powerful document, The Curticy rules
of blindness. If you could and I do not know how, put a link to it. It
answers many of the questions people have.
Also I always say the it is better to be pro-active, than to be re-active.
Companies, government agencies and the rest are not thinking in this way.
They are interested in making the product or facilities and not about the
small minority of people with disabilities.

I also had a similar situation with my VR counselor. The Division Of Blind
Services refused to pay for my Bachelor's degree unless I provided
sufficient justification. After I submitted my justification and had a
meeting with them they still refused to pay for it.
