JD,

My concern is that if I relied on vr agency, then what would I do meanwhile
at work?
I mean, it could take a year or something. You're preaching to the choir
regarding necessary scripting.
I am just wondering how feasible it is.
Do all employers allow someone to come in and script their systems? How long
does it take?
I mean, will it really work long term?
For one thing, employers constantly update software.
So, your scripts may work now, but would they continue to work in the next
releases of software?
What if the software is connected to online systems which can have minor
changes.
A few minor changes in that html coding or other program coding can break
those scripts.

Yes, its their job in vr to provide a braille notetaker or technology.
But in my instance, virginia, they told me that first it was the employer's
responsibility to provide the reasonable accomodation. They want you to
first go to your employer so they don't have to purchase you anything!
If the employer does not grant you that accomodation, then vr will step in.
Its rather hard to get them to buy you technology. Most blind people I know
work for the federal government or some very large agency, so their employer
had the financial means to buy accomodations. But many employers don't have
an extra 6000 to buy a braille notetaker or say $12000 for a braille
display.
For instance, my dad works for a small company and he said it would be a
financial burden to provide assistive technology to employees. Many
nonprofits I've volunteered for or tried to volunteer for did not have the
financial resources either to provide jaws and other accomodations. I ended
up installing my version of jaws as a demo or full version depending on the
situation.
Yes, vr should be helpful. But, reality indicates they are not. I know of
blind people having to delay college because vr failed to fund it on time.
And, if bills are not paid timely for classes, they drop your classes.
But I'm just saying that all blind people I know had employers provide
accomodations.
In other words, they did not need the state agency.
But in the nonprofit sector, many organizations cannot afford such assistive
tech.
So If I work for a nonprofit, its highly likely I will need vr.
Rebecca, who started this conversation, did not seem to be connected to a
state agency anyways, so seeking help from such a agency is not a viable
option for her if I understand her situation.
I'm glad you have scripts and its working for you.
But, I'm wondering how good such an accomodation is for others.

My experience is that employers do not hire someone who needs
"accomadations" when other applicants are available.

Yes, Blind Services can be horribly slow and non-accomadating, but scripting
is essential if you are to negotiate the multiple screens in an electronic
medical record program. For mine I must review psychiatric notes for their
most current diagnosis, move between at least 7 different pages to do one
progress note. Each of these pages is different and reads differently using
your basic screen reader program. By having the program scripted you can do
the chore, but without the scripting, at least with my EMR, it would be
totally impossible.

I would prepare your Blind Services case manager that you will, most likely,
need the help. Remember that they get credit for your becoming employed.
It is in their best interest to be your best helper. If your case manager
is a jerk, clinically speaking, simply go up the ladder; advocate your
yourself.

I do know that it rubs the wrong way to feel beholding to Blind Services,
but they can be agreeable to provide you with a braille display or note
taker, or other devices that can make your job possible. In fact, that is
their job.

Quinto,
excellent questions. I hear all about scripting as a solution and I wonder
how good it actually is. Is it just to give you semi access, enough to get
by?
Importantly, who paid for it and how long did it take? I hesitate to rely on
the state agency for the blind as they are slow and inefficient.
I'd rather work out accomodations with my employer if at all possible.

Hi list,

I am curious for those of you who have had someone come in and write scripts
to make EMR programs more accessible, how well did that work? Were you then
able to use all aspects of the software or was it only the most essential
features needed for your employment? Were you able to read history, case
notes, assessments, appointment scheduling.... and were you able to not only
read but insert information as needed? Thanks in advance.
