Dear CYW Friends and Family,

The Center for Youth Wellness is a proud supporter of the Trauma-Informed Care for Children and Families Act, introduced last week in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. CYW weighed in on the earliest drafts of this bill, which recognizes that traumatic life events powerfully affect children’s health. 

Real life doesn’t happen in silos, so we're pleased that this bill would propagate trauma-informed practices across so many systems and institutions--health, education, social services and more. This bill would also expand Medicaid coverage for child trauma services, and calls for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect data on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and study the prevalence of trauma in the U.S.

CYW has also recently endorsed California legislation to:

*	Ensure that children are assessed for trauma, as part of their routine health screening through Medicaid (AB 340, Arambula)
*	Provide coordinated mental health services in schools for children to recover from traumatic experiences so they're ready to learn again (SB 191, Beall)
*	Create a Bill of Rights for Children and Youth that would promote social and emotional skills, support parents, and otherwise buffer children from adversity and toxic stress (SB 18, Pan) 

As a leader in the national effort to revolutionize pediatric medicine and transform the way society responds to children exposed to ACEs, CYW is making its impact felt through groundbreaking clinical, research and movement-building work. Routine screening for early adversity and trauma is an essential step toward early detection and effective intervention to promote long-term health, learning and development for children.
