Isn't it interesting that we are drawn to help others that are many
times, most like ourselves or things that affect us personally? I am sure
this is not always true but I think it is more often than not.

Hello Corey.
Excellent question. A little about me, I am pursuing a creer in becoming a
Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I want my therapy modality to be Trauma
Focussed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I want to be able to work with
children between the ages of 10-13 that have been affected by either
physical, emotional or sexual abuse. This adolescent age is right before
high school where one tends to really start finding their individuality.
Trauma has been shown to severely stunt an individual's own self-perception.
I want them to be able to retrain their thoughts to be of a positive
self-image. A little self-disclosure of myself is that I went through
similar experiences for nearly two decades of my life. I chose this path
because I do not want to see the future generations experience what I went
through.
This type of therapy modality personally helped me so much and I know that
it will help others. I love helping people, I have always considered myself
a selfless person, I love performing community service ( as I am also in the
national community service division and am starting a division in Texas) I
fully believe in the values of altruism, where you get back what you put in,
when you combine that with helping others, it improves overall mental
health. .

Warm regards,

Jonathan Franks BSW
Secretary
National Federation of the Blind Human Services Division

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people  and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
