I work at a center for independent living so I may work with one from time to time. I've worked with persons on the altistic spectrum, and it depends on how their disability affects them as to what to do. The things I did, and this is not a be all end all list, is to make sure they here you by illiciting responses. Keep them in the flow of the conversation, speaking to them, and getting them to talk back, and speaking at them. Find out what they are interested in and build a rapport based on that. Ask them about them. I've found that talking to them about things they like gets them comfortable with you.
