Hello Amanda,
How much training will you get on the job? Do you have a counseling degree or something similar?
That would help you be prepared. Crisis lines are tough because of the nature of what people call about. Be sure to relax and take care of yourself while you undertake this job.
I like helping people which is why I desire a hands on job such as an activity leader and I like to brighten people's day. My undergraduate degree was a BA in liberal studies which included many courses in psychology.
But I could not handle crisis lines; I have been told though that my good communication skills and supportive voice would make me a good fit for hotlines though and when I looked for volunteer work with the children and youth division of family services in my county, they did mention the domestic and sexual violence hotline and wondered if I'd take the job.
They saw I was low vision and probably figured that maybe phone work would be a better fit for me than administrative work.
I could also do program support work as well in an office now as a volunteer or office staff.
I admire people who can take such jobs like this especially being blind due to the multitasking auditory work hearing a screen reader to document information and the caller's voice.
If you have an idea of what books of specific topics you are seeking, maybe I can also suggest more. I did recommend a few books by William Ury already and I think those are good ones and easy but informative reading. The
Booked named The Worry Trap is also good and more clinical based.
Do you have a subscription with Learning Ally? If so, they have several textbooks and academic type books in their library; their books are read by human readers. I use it and the quality of reading varies but for someone who likes human speech better, it is good for me usually.
I hope you do well on the job!
Ashley
