> A clip from the Blog:
> How smartphones help a blind person navigate: part one
> Post date: Tuesday, 1 November 2016
> In the first of two blogs on the topic of mobility tech, Robin Christopherson, Head of Digital Inclusion at AbilityNet, and a technology enthusiast, talks about the options available to blind and partially sighted people on today’s market.
>
> We live in exciting times for accessible mobility and as a blind person myself, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the technology that exists today that helps with mobility assistance for people with vision impairment.
>
> How can a smartphone help people with sight loss navigate a journey when out and about?
>
> What is GPS Positioning and why is it important?
> Navigation apps on smartphones use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate a person’s position anywhere on Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to three or more GPS satellites.
>
> Apps that use GPS are hugely helpful for general mobility, such as knowing which street you’re on, however, GPS won’t always necessarily get you to a specific location like a particular doorway - or often even to the right building or side-street. This is because at best, the satellites that power GPS can recognise your position up to five metres off of your actual location and at worst, can often be quite inaccurate. I’ll cover strategies for dealing with this later in the blog.
>
> Mobility apps
> Maps app
> Built into every iPhone and iPad is a navigation app, imaginatively named Maps. Don’t discount the app as being too visual because with VoiceOver functionality switched on, it can be wonderfully helpful.
>
> Adding clarity to mobility
> This article wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the new Magnifier built into the latest iOS software (version10). If you have some useful vision and an iPhone or iPad with the latest software downloaded, then your world is about to get much clearer.
>
> Phone a friend – or stranger
> If you need help identifying an object or reading a TV guide, why not video call a friend to ask them your query? If you have an iPhone, use the Facetime app to call other iPhones for free. Why not use Siri to start a Skype audio or video call?
>
> Further information
> In the second part of his blog which will be available later in November, Robin will look at what mobility gadgets are en route to arrive in the near future.

> Urge Your Member of Congress to Take Action on Impending Overtime Labor Department Rule
>
> Dear NAMA Members:
> The election is over and Congress has returned to Washington, DC. One of the issues on the docket is a potential modification to the Department of Labor Overtime Rule.
>
> NAMA is urging members to ask their elected officials in DC to support S. 3464, https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/3464 The Overtime Reform and Review Act, a Senate bill that would stretch out the timeline for implementing the rule over five years.
>
> This legislation includes not only the five-year phase-in, but also a provision requiring an independent study of the rule after the first year of implementation. Should the rule be found to negatively impact American workers and the economy, nonprofit groups (including colleges and universities), state and local governments, and many Medicaid and Medicare-eligible facilities would be exempt from any further increases under the rule.
>
> Time is of the essence on this issue. Please download the NAMA grassroots app and contact your elected official today. Passage of this bill could provide companies the ability to phase in this major change in employment law. You can contact your Members of Congress and send this message to them by using the NAMA Grassroots Mobile App.
>
> If you have not already done so follow the directions below for downloading the NAMA Grassroots App.
>
> Step 1: To register for the app, click here https://nama.constituentvoice.net/an/register
>
> Step 2: After registering, you'll be provided download links for the app. Download the app version appropriate for your device:
> •iPhone https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/namavoice/id1132367404?mt=8
> •Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.namavoice.android
>
> Step 3:
> Once you've downloaded the app, take action by sending your Senator a message supporting S. 3464, The Overtime Reform and Review legislation to reduce the impact of the recent Department of Labor Overtime Pay Rule.

> PLEASE COMPLETE THE NFB BLIND VOTER SURVEY at www.nfb.org .
> The Help America Vote Act establishes a legal right for each blind and low vision voter to be allowed to cast an independent and private ballot. We need to know whether this opportunity was provided to you when you cast your ballot in the 2016 Presidential election. How was your overall voting experience this time? For instance, was accessible voting equipment available for your use? Were poll workers able to explain how to use it? Were any problems resolved?
>
> If things went well, we need to know that. We also need to know if your voting experience was not satisfactory. That is why we need you and other blind and low vision voters to complete our brief survey on the 2016 blind voter experience. The survey results will help us work to improve the voting process in future elections.
>
> We urge you to complete the survey now, while your experience is still fresh. Please also encourage others to complete the survey. The survey links are on the NFB home page, www.nfb.org , and the deadline for responses is November 29th.

> National Federation of the Blind Partners with Santa to Promote Braille Literacy
>
> Baltimore, Maryland (November 14, 2016): Once again, Santa has enlisted the help of the elves at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Jernigan Institute to get Braille letters out to hundreds of blind boys and girls this Christmas season.
>
> Mark A. Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: “Santa approached the National Federation of the Blind several years ago and asked us to be his helpers. Knowing how much he means to children everywhere, including my own, I am pleased that we will once again be assisting St. Nicholas this year. Braille literacy is the key to success and opportunity for the blind, but unfortunately too few blind children are learning it today. This program is a fun way for blind children to practice their Braille skills while receiving a holiday greeting from Santa himself.”
>
> Between November 14 and December 16, parents of young children, under the age of ten, can visit http://www.nfb.org and fill out a Santa Braille Letter request form. The form can also be printed and faxed to (410) 685-2340. Beginning November 28, the Braille letters from Santa will start going out to blind boys and girls across the country. The Braille letter will also be accompanied by a print copy for mom and dad to read and some other fun Christmastime activities. Requests for letters must include the writer’s name, the child’s name, birthday, gender, mailing address, a telephone number, and email address in case Santa’s helpers at the National Federation of the Blind have questions.
>
> The deadline for letter requests is December 16 to ensure that a return letter in Braille is received before Christmas.

> This holiday season, the NFB community service division will be sending letters to our brave men and women in the military who have or are currently dedicating their lives to keeping our country safe. The holidays are often a difficult time for members of the military being that many of them are separated from their friends and family. We will be sending our letters to Operation Gratitude, which sends care packages to troops which will contain our letters. When writing a letter, please include and consider the following:
>
> 1: begin your letter with a salutation. In the salutation, include who you would like the letter to be sent to; veteran, new recruit, deployed troop, wounded warrior, or first responder.
> 2: include one or more paragraphs thanking the individual for their service and their sacrifice.
> 3: include one or more paragraphs about yourself; occupation, interest, pets, hobbies, or funny stories to name a few.
> 4: conclude your letter with thanking them once again for serving.
> 5: do not include the following: political views, religious views with the exception of saying you will pray for them, any identifying information in regards to a miners school, full name, or location, negativity as we are bringing cheer and positivity this holiday season. If you are over the age of 18, you may include an address or email address for the soldier to write back. However, keep in mind your own privacy when making this decision.
> 6: email your letters to: serviceawards at nfbcommunityservice.org
> If you would like to sign your letter for a more personal touch, you are more than welcome to do so and send a scanned copy which I will print to be sent. If requested, I also will sign any letters in braille.
>
> Writing a letter will take less than 15 minutes of your day, but be so very valuable to those who are serving us. I strongly encourage all to participate and look forward to seeing all of the positive support and gratitude for our brave men and women. Letters are due December 16th Email me at taranabella0 at gmail.com with questions.

> The Cook County Board of Commissioners passed a penny-per-ounce beverage tax this afternoon after hours of testimony from those for and against the tax.
>
> The tax was passed without a majority of commissioners in favor. During the finance committee meeting, the vote was tied 8-8. A special meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners followed where President Toni Preckwinkle made an unprecedented procedural move to break the tie vote, therefore passing the tax.
>
> We wanted to thank everyone who not only attended the meeting today but the previous public hearings. We appreciate your time and energy voicing your opposition to the regressive tax proposal. We are working with several media outlets on the vote outcome.
>
> For reference, we issued the following statement from for the Cook County Coalition Against Beverage Taxes:
>
> “Today the Cook County Board of Commissioners chose to place a regressive beverage tax on working families. This will result in fewer jobs, lower incomes and higher grocery bills. Consumers and small businesses will now have to pay the price and bear the burden of Cook County’s budget deficit. Our broad coalition of individuals, small businesses, labor groups and restaurants will continue talking with Commissioners and the community about the effects of this tax.”

> Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is Deciding Vote in Unprecedent Move to Pass Regressive Beverage Tax
>
> On Thursday, November 10 the Cook County Board of Commissioners chose to place a regressive beverage tax on working families. The Cook County Board of Commissioners passed a penny-per-ounce beverage tax after hours of testimony from those for and against the tax proposal.
>
> The tax was passed without a majority of commissioners in favor. During the Finance Committee meeting, the vote was tied 8-8 and the proposed ordinance died. (Commissioner Steele was not present).
>
> Using an unprecedented procedural move, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was able to call a special board meeting to reconsider the tie vote on the beverage tax that occurred in committee. At that meeting she cast her tiebreaking vote and approved the tax.
>
> We believe this regressive and very narrow tax will dramatically increase costs for working families, impose a tremendous burden on small businesses and put thousands of Cook County jobs at risk. We will continue to inform commissioners about the negative effects of the tax and work to develop meaningful partnerships that address the shared goal of improved public health, but do not put working class families and small businesses at risk.
>
> While this is not the outcome we wanted, we do want to thank those commissioners who stood with working families, restaurant and small business owners, beverage industry employees and the thousands of residents who voiced opposition to the beverage tax.
>
> Thank you to:
> Commissioner Richard Boykin, District 1
> Commissioner John Fritchey, District 12
> Commissioner Bridget Gainer, District 10
> Commissioner Gregg Goslin, District 14
> Commissioner Sean Morrison, District 17
> Commissioner Timothy Schneider, District 15
> Commissioner Peter Silvestri, District 9
> Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski, District 16
>
> And another important thank you to all of our coalition members who shared their opposition at public hearings, in video testimonials, through calls, letters, emails and social media. Thank you!

The following Clif items will have unique SKU numbers and will have a sticker on the front to denote the caloric content: FOP compliant Clif Bar Chocolate Chip, Luna Bar Lemon Zest and Clif Builder’s Chocolate Peanut Butter will start shipping 3/6/17. Distributors will carry dual inventories. These 3 SKU’s are for Vending machines only! For example, a Clif Chocolate Chip for Vending Customers only and a Clif Chocolate Chip for all other customers. SOS – Save Our Spot! Static-clings are an interim solution until we can get this product to market. The static clings will still be useful for operators who want to use products in their machines beyond the 3 that will be denoted with stickers. Non-FOP SKU’s should go into micromarkets, pantries, and OCS. If you cannot manage dual inventory, then please consider slotting non-FOP SKU’s for MM’s and pantries. We will be notifying NAMA today and they will put these 3 SKU’s on their compliant list. Look for it on their website by the end of the week. I also want to make it known that this is recognition of the importance of the vending channel to Clif . They are offering this solution to show their commitment to the vending business. Please see the examples below.
