NFBI CHICAGO CHAPTER MINUTES

 

MEETING OF AUGUST 13, 2016

 

The meeting was called to order by Second Vice-President, Jemal Powell at
1:01 P.M.

 

What's happening: Eileen Truschke mentioned that LeAnn Mayne passed away on
June 28. Denise avant mentioned that Teresa Meyer is now in remission. Steve
Hastalis noted the passing of Laura Mannon. There were 21 people present.

 

Program: Jemal introduced the program as a Thought Provoker. The question to
be discussed was whether or not one should take special accommodations
offered by the general public?

 

Secretary's report: It was moved and seconded to approve the minutes to the
June 2016 meeting. The minutes were approved with the following correction.
The July picnic was scheduled for July 23 rather than July 21.

 

Presidential Reports

 

National Presidential Release: Mark Riccobono, President, National
Federation of the Blind reported on the following items: The NFB EQ program
is now happening. This is a program where students learn engineering design.
The Maryland Bell program is occurring simultaneously. We have reached a
settlement with Pursuant Health of Massachusetts, who has agreed to make
their kiosks accessible. This is the first company who has made such an
agreement with anyone. An additional lawsuit has been filed concerning
inaccessible kiosks in New York. The National Federation of the Blind and
Google will be doing a Train the Trainers seminar in October on the
accessibility of Google products. The deadline for applications for this
workshop is September 2. Questions about this seminar should be directed to
Clara Vangerven at cvangerven at nfb.org. We should think of activities to do
during Meet the Blind month which will occur in October. NFB will be hosting
the general assemblies of the World Blind Union and the International
Council for the Education of the Visually Impaired. Meetings will occur at
the Rosen Center Hotel from August 18-25. Several NFB members have passed
away in the previous month, including Tara Cartie, Ribecca Turley, Harold
Hayes and Michael, Grandson of Diane McGeorge. and Harley Setterman. James
Scheehen and Nicole Finchem were married in July.

 

State Presidential Report: State President, Denise Avant reported on the
following. We had a grate National convention. Our delegation featured all
of our scholarship winners from 2015 as well as several additional first
time attendees. Our face-to-face board meeting will occur on Saturday,
August 27 at the Chicago Naperville Marriott from 9:00 A.M. to approximately
3:00 P.M. Lunch will be $20 with a choice of either a turkey sandwich or
veggie wrap. Convention assistance can be obtained by applying to the
Chappell-Dennis fund. The form for this application can be found on the NFBI
website. Application may be emailed to Denise at davant1958 at gmail.com.
Applications must be in by 11:59 P.M. on September 1. Call your chapter
President if you need assistance with the form. Our October fest will occur
on September 17 at the home of Patti and Francisco Chang, 6919 West Berwyn
Avenue, Chicago. The cost for this event is $25 per person. Reservations are
due to Patti by September 10. Room rates for the state convention are $104
nightly. Our national representative will be Joe Ruffalo from New Jersey.
Hotel reservations must be in by October 7 with pre-registration due by
October 14. Several agenda items are already set. Our raffle is on the NFBI
website. Chances are $5 each. There will be three prizes with first prize
being $500, second prize $300, and third prize $200. Finally, we were all
encouraged to sign up for the National Preauthorized Contribution Plan, (PAC
Plan.)

 

Treasurers Report: Steve Hastalis, treasurer, gave the second quarter
report. Beginning balance, April 1, $6,876. Income, $1,518. Expenses,
$3,100. Ending balance, June 30, $5,294. The report was approved as
presented.

 

Chairman Powell then announced the following items. We will vote on proposed
constitutional amendments in September. Our October activity will be our
annual read-athon which will occur following the chapter meeting on
Saturday, October 8.

 

Old Business: Denise Avant announced that we need door prizes for the state
convention. Please bring items that are easy to carry.

 

There was no new business.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 2:10 P.M.
