[Iabs-talk] reporting on lack of response from Congressman Quigley's office

I am disappointed in the lack of response from congressman Quigley’s office. In years of working with the congressman I have never felt as though the blind community does not have a voice. I am copying our listserv to let our members know that despite repeated patient requests we cannot get a response from congressman Quigley’s office as to what his positions on our legislation will be.
We met with a legislative aid in February and have been unable since then to ascertain what the congressman is planning to do with regard to our requests.

Our state convention is at the end of the month. We will want to report to our members congressional positions on our legislative initiatives. This is the largest gathering of the blind in Illinois. In fact Congressman Quigley has spoken at a previous convention. Can we please get an answer as to his positions so that I can report other than we are unable to ascertain after numerous contacts?

Dear Erica,
Per your request our factsheets are attached. We already had a staff level meeting on these issues. Since we have no update and the congressman has not yet cosponsored any of these, we were looking for a meeting or a conference call with the congressman if possible. Generally he is supportive on our issues. In fact he did cosponsor a previous iteration of the TIME act. Can you update us as to his current positions on these bills? Can we get a few minutes of the congressman’s time in the alternative please.

Dear Erica,
Per our recent phone conversation, I am writing to request an appointment or a conference call to discuss issues impacting the blind of Illinois. Several of our members live in the district and would appreciate an opportunity to speak with Congressman Quigley or an appropriate legislative aid. Please note these are not health care issues. Rather we are an advocacy group.
Below is a quick outline of our issues:
Accessible Instructional Material in Higher Education Act, H.R. 1772 (AIM HIGH)
This bill will promote instructional technology and content that are accessible to the blind and other students with print disabilities.
Access Technology Affordability Act of 2017, H.R. 1734 and S. 732 (ATAA)
These bills will facilitate the purchase of access technology for blind people by creating a refundable, per person tax credit.
Transitioning to Integrated and Meaningful Employment Act of 2017, H.R. 1377 (TIME)
This bill will increase employment opportunities by removing stigmas and low expectations propagated by section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Note that the bill now phases out subminimum wages over a six year period corresponding to the recommendation of the National Council on Disability.
We met with your office in February regarding these issues and I believed that we received a favorable hearing. We are looking for the next step on these bills. I can resend you our factsheets ahead of time if you like.
