Greetings Illinois students,
I know our student division hasn't been near as active here lately. Last
night, I was on a National Association of Blind Students (NABS) town hall
meeting. While I was on the meeting, I had asked who the student liaison is
for Illinois.
Ours is from Nebraska, and his name is Ben Grelk. A NABS liaison is someone
who is from another state, but can help our state plan and come up with
student division ideas.
Ben and I had a call individually after the meeting, and we discuss some
possible ideas or plans. I know as students, we are very spread out across
the state, and so is Ben with his Nebraska division.
A few ideas we thought of is getting any of the blind students in your
area, whatever part of the state you're from, together and maybe going to a
movie and utilizing audio description. Maybe meeting up at an ice cream
shop. Just different ideas. The one thing Ben emphasized was how important
it is to have that in-person connection.
I know, with us being so spread out, it's definitely a planning factor, but
it is totally worth it.
Ben was okay if I shared his contact information; he's even CC'D on this
email, so he has it as well. His email and phone number are provided below:
