hi ray, but ii wasn't a total. my parents fought with the doctors to get me out of the braille classes into largeprint.for a long time my vision was always classified as 20 over 175. so they fought that i wasn't legally blind. i think the numbewr was fake and this was a way to get me into the sight saving classes. my parents were definitely wrong in their philosophy. fifty years later when my vision was pretty much gone i had to learn all the things i needed and had forgotten. when i walked into my parent's home with my first white cane, they were surprised and saddened, i was very happy. i had worked so hard to keep everyone from finding out how blind i was and now i could walk around with they symbol announcing my blindness. 
 i had to learn to be ateacher all over again with the help of many NFB teachers. after teaching for 31 years as a 'normal' teacher i taught the last 9 years of my career as a blind teacher it actually was easier in many ways than trying to hide my blindness.

Hi Debbie:

I agree.  Not only were my parents not embarrassed about my reading Braille,
but my mom also started learning Braille in case she had to Braille my
homework for me, before we found out about residential school placement.
