[il-talk] Sun-Times on nfb Newsline!

Kelly,

You're missing the point entirely. Patti is correct to say that some people
simply prefer using a program like newsline as opposed to going on the net.
In fact,, this discussion goes beyond that. Many of us do not have a
computer, nor are we able, nor may we choose to navigate the internet for
any reason. Not everyone in the blind community is fortunate enough to be
able to afford such things. For example, nearly 40% of our chapter members
do not have e-mail. I would dare say that this represents a typical cross
section of the blind community at large. There are probably less than 4% of
us who do not own telephones. It comes down to accessibility and ease of
operation. And, no matter how wonderful the internet can be it will never
approach the ease of operation that NFB-NEWSLINE has to offer.

Newspapers should be available for all who wish to read them. So long as
the rate of unemployment is what it is in the blind community, there is no
way that the internet can be universally accepted, at least not in that
community.

Patti,

does the Naperville Sun, Aurora Beacon-News, the Joliet Herald-News, or the
Elgin Courier-News publish all or substantially all of its content on the
web or just a portion of their content? the trend with newspapers is online
with some papers eliminating print distribution, such as the Christian
Science Monitor, and others scaling it back significantly, such as with the
Capitol Times in Madison, Wisconsin. The Chicago Tribune's business section
has many more stories in the online edition compared to the print edition
from what I understand.Yes, the cluttered pages can be a hassle. I have
figured out how to navigate the Tribune's cluttered pages successfully. We
can talk sometime about the approaches I use.

Kelly
