Charlene,

Thank you for the info. There will be rides given to those that come in on the train. All I need to know is what train they are taking. This offer of a ride applies to the visitation on Friday and the funeral service on Saturday.

Warm Regards.. Joe Lanier

Subject: [Isvialumni] Joliet Information

As a long-time Joliet train traveler, I wanted to bring to your attention some information regarding Joliet and the train station and transportation,.

The Joliet train station has an elevated platform where the tracks are located. Street level is two flights of stairs below. Often, especially at night, the station is unmanned (or unwomaned.)

If you have a need for accessibility, the elevator can be a problem. The Metra side of the station has the elevator, but sometimes, the doors are locked--necessitating someone walking downstairs to send the elevator to the top level for someone needing the elevator. There is a sign that reads: "If you need the elevator, go to New Lennox or Tinley Park." Val and Rick Parrish can tell you more about this ongoing problem with the train station and the elevator.

Plainfield Road is Route 30--a four-lane highway. I don't know whether the bus stops on a regular basis at the site of the funeral home, or if one must be able to wave down a bus. Persons needing bus transportation may want to call the train station or the Joliet bus transportation to alert them. I don't think blind people are seen doing independent travel as frequently as in Chicago.

There is a cab service, but cabs are not always dependable. I don't know the exact cost of a cab from the train station to the funeral parlor or the church.

If anyone needs paratransit, they should call today, Thursday. There is some reciprocity between paratransit providers, but in the Joliet area, there is also township transit which is an individual matter. You must specify that you are ADA elligible for paratransit. I have no idea how paratransit responds to phone contact.

I am not writing this to try to deter anyone who wants to from attending Carmen's services, I just want people to know the situation and to make decisions accordingly.

Charlene Elder
