I thought that it had to be inserted into the USB port on the side of the
player.

A thumb drive can actually work in either player by guiding it into the port
where the cartridge would be inserted. (I put it between the index fingers
of each hand and aim for the center.) On the advanced machine, this avoids
the possibility of breaking the thumb drive while carrying the unit around.
It is also possible, on the advanced player, to put content other than NLS
books on a cartridge or thumb drive.

Cordially,
Bill

Kelly, thank you for the info about the thumb drive. A friend and I were
just talking about that.

Realize that a lot of NLS books are still only available on tape. All
RFB&D books are available for digital download though and they play on
the NLS digital player.

Instead of cartriges, I use a four gigabyte thumb drive, which can
hold about 20 books.

The cartridges were $12, and I'm not sure about the cord. Probably less
than $10. Note that you can put only one book on a cartridge, but you can
obviously erase the book when you'd done and use the cartridge again.

I bought some blank cartridges for the new NLS digital book player,

getting

those and a special cord from American Printing House for the Blind.

Wht were prices Bob?
