Hi Hilda
One can participate in the NFB Braille Readers Are Leaders contest for a
variety of reasons.
If one is competitively minded, you can try to read many pages in your
category, hoping to wind prizes and national recognition. As Denise said,
there are different levels within BRAL, including the beginner category.
But you can also enter BRAL, as I do, as a way to improve my Braille skills.
I'm also in the beginner category, and will never win any prizes for the
number of pages I read, but BRAL spurs me on to do more than I might do
otherwise. For the two months of the contest, I try hard to read Braille
every day, and to read more pages than I would normally. In a way, I'm in a
contest with myself, seeing how many pages I can read in 60 days.
Also, as Denise mentioned, the NFB of Illinois has a LIFE Group, a small
group that gets together by teleconference once a week to read Braille. We
read aloud at the telecon out of the same book, taking turns. We then have
"homework," a certain number of pages to read during the week before the
next telecon. The idea again is to improve our Braille, to get us to read
Braille on a regular basis, and to interact with other Braille readers.
If you have any questions, call me.
