Great Dome to make more Amtrak runs. Jon Hilkevitch. Amtrak's historic Great Dome rail car will be running on more routes through Chicago during Thanksgiving week, the railroad announced Monday. . The dome car, which was featured in a Tribune story Nov. 4, will operate on some trains between Chicago and Milwaukee, and between Chicago and St. Louis, from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, Amtrak said. The car's upper level is equipped with windows on all sides, including the entire length of the roof, to provide panoramic views. Built in 1955, it is one of only six dome cars that remain in Amtrak service. The dome car has been running on trips this month between Chicago and Quincy. In response to public interest, the car will operate on Amtrak's Hiawatha Service, between Chicago and Milwaukee, Nov. 25-28 on the following trains only: Numbers 329, 332, 333, 336, 337, 340 and 341; and Dec. 1 on trains 331, 334, 335, 338, 339 and 342. It also will operate on the Lincoln Service between Chicago and St. Louis on Nov. 29 and 30 on trains 303 and 306, Amtrak said. Details and reservations can be made at amtrak.com
