Jazz Virtuoso Credits Braille on 60 Minutes

When Marcus Roberts was 10, his parents sent him to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, in Saint Augustine, where a music teacher - also blind - changed his life.

Hubert Foster introduced Marcus to Bach and Beethoven. “He was an amazing man," says Marcus. He told Marcus, "You don't want to be ignorant. Because if you add ignorance with not bein' able to see, you're gonna have a rough life. That's not gonna work out for you."

So Marcus embraced education, saying, “I didn't want to be participating in this noble savage notion of being an artist who doesn't really know what he's doing.” Listen to the entire 60 minutes interview with jazz virtuoso, Marcus Roberts.

Karen Keninger Promises to Elevate Braille!

When Karen Keninger, Director of NLS's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, accepted the Hands On! Award at the NBP Gala last fall, she had some exciting things to say. Karen promised to promote the development of an affordable eReader and to elevate braille to its rightful place as a literacy medium for blind and visually impaired people. Hear what Karen had to say about braille.
