Thanks so much!  This actually worked!  Actually I wanted to lower the 
volume, not raise it, as I'm using a headset.

Debbie,

You actually regulate your jaws volume by setting the system volume.  What
is likely, is that your system volume is probably low.  If you are using a
windows 7 machine, you will most likely find your volume settings in the
system tray, which you access with the key combination insert+f11.  Once you
get into the system tray, you should find a speaker volume setting.  On my
machine, it is at the bottom of the list view.  It should tell you where
your speaker volume is.  If it is less than 100%, you should be able to
enter on this setting and turn up your system volume with the up arrow key.
On my machine, the speaker volume and the head phone volume are the same
control.  If you are using an XP machine, you need to do the following.
1.  Press the windows key.
2.  Press C until you get to the control panel, then press enter.
3.  Press S until you get to sounds and audio devices, and again press
enter.  In this menu, you should find a volume control.  Continue to press
or hold the up arrow key, releasing it periodically to find out where you
are.  Again, I would set the volume at 100%.  Hopefully, this will help.

This feels like a really silly question, since I've been a JAWS user for
more than fifteen years.  Nonetheless, I'm asking.  How does one adjust the
volume in JAWS?  All of the explanations I've been able to find online seem
very complicated, and I am pretty sure there's an easy and straightforward
way to do it.  Any pointers will be greatly appreciated!
