Hi Jim,

I am writing to follow up regarding the email Mrs. Patti Gregory Chang, president of the Illinois affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind, wrote to you a few weeks ago. She requested Congressman Shimkus’ support for HR 831: the Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act.

As Mrs. Chang said, Section 14c of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the provision that allows entities to pay people with disabilities less than minimum wage, is very outdated. It is time for it to be responsibly phased out as HR 831 proposes.

Can we count on Mr. Shimkus’ support? He will be joining 91 other Members of Congress including Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Congressman Pete Sessions who, along with bill sponsor Congressman Gregg Harper, are the parents of children with disabilities.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Rose Sloan

I wanted to add my request personally to what Ms. Sloan has sent. As the President of the largest organization of the blind in Illinois I assure you that we need support on this bill. Its time has come. Please note that both Equip for Equality and the Chicago Lighthouse are also in favor.

Good Morning Jim,

I write on behalf of seventy-five disability organizations to respectfully ask for Representative Shimkus’ support for H.R. 831: the Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act. Sponsored by Congressman Gregg Harper, the father of an adult child with Fragile X syndrome, H.R. 831 will phase out Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 which allows entities to pay people with disabilities subminimum wages.

Did you have a chance to read the op-ed by Congressman Harper in Wednesday’s edition of The Hill?Congressman Harper points out that people with disabilities can currently be paid pennies per hour. This could have happened to his son. H.R. 831 will responsibly phase out this outdated practice, allowing workers with disabilities to reach their maximum potential.

Can we count on Representative Shimkus to cosponsor H.R. 831? Please find the bill language and list of supporting organizations attached. To cosponsor, please email Scot Malvaney atScot.Malvaney at mail.house.gov.

Thank you,

Rose Sloan
