9 Traits of Well-Loved Entrepreneurs
Being a successful entrepreneur takes more than just navigating your company through the rough waters of business. It means inspiring your staff to do everything it can to help grow your business.

October 02, 2014
We all know the type—the business owner for whom every employee would bend over backward. The shop owner whose staff gladly works overtime or comes in on their day off if needed. The company founder who treats every employee like a member of the family and is as revered as the beloved head of a real family.

These are the entrepreneurs who inspire fierce loyalty and adoration, and we can learn a lot from them. So just what is it that makes them so special?

1. They’re truly authentic. Entrepreneurs who are adored by their staffs are unabashedly themselves. They’re consistent because they’re not playing a game or putting up a front when they’re on the job. Whether you see them in the office or at the local park, these people are always true to themselves.

2. They understand the power of reciprocity. Well-loved entrepreneurs understand that hard work, honesty and trust are given to the bosses who first demonstrate those qualities themselves. Being open, trusting and trustworthy, and willing to work harder than anyone on their staff is how the best business owners manage to have a staff who’d go to the ends of the earth to prove they deserve the boss’s respect.

3. They’re positive. As business owners, we have to learn to lead the way in enthusiasm. After all, if you’re not excited about your company, how on earth can you expect that of your assistant? Harness the power of emotion, and show your staff that you’re pumped about what you’re doing. It’s important to acknowledge the negative things that will arise, but you should work to banish negativity (and the morale drain it creates) from your workplace.

4. They’re highly approachable. The most powerful entrepreneurs I know are fiercely democratic in that they believe we’re all equal. An adored entrepreneur knows that every single employee is important, has valuable insight to share and provides a unique value to the company. Whether it’s the janitor, the top salesperson or the part-time customer service rep, every single member of our staff needs to know we're available to them.

5. They listen more than they talk. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason, folks. We should listen twice as much as we speak, and well-loved entrepreneurs understand this principle. Observe, learn and take it all in. Then when you have something to say, people will listen. Make your words count because of their content, rather than by being the most long-winded one in the room.

6. They pat, kick, pat. Entrepreneurs have to deal with problems just like anyone else, but what differentiates the adored ones from the rest is the ability to give constructive criticism. Start with a pat on the back, follow it up with a kick in the ass and end with a pat on the back. Praise, admonish and praise. This technique softens the blow and reinforces your belief that your employee is an important member of your team.

7. They work hard. True entrepreneurs know they have to set the example for the entire company. If you’re merely in it for the Rolex and the golf club write-off, then it’s going to show in the attitudes of your staff. Working hard sets the tone and motivates your employees to follow your lead.

8. They’re both authoritative and human. Adored entrepreneurs don’t ignore problems. They acknowledge that problems are inevitable, then set out to solve them right away. We like our leaders to come with a healthy dose of empathy and a willingness to acknowledge that any path that’s worth taking will come with its share of difficulties. Let your employees know you’re a realist who won’t tolerate problems for long. Be a problem solver, and move on.

9. They’re masters of public recognition. There’s a huge reward in acknowledgment. Being lavishly, genuinely praised in public will win your staff over every single time. Just as you should serve up criticism in private, you should bestow praise publicly. Your employees will not only be proud of their accomplishments, but they'll also be proud of their place in your company.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not telling you that being an entrepreneur is a bed of roses. There will be plenty of times when you have to make hard decisions that can’t possibly make everyone happy.

What I am unequivocally saying is that you can consistently keep the respect and adoration of your staff if you model the traits listed above.

**5 From Lawrence Carter-Long, National Council on Disability
October 31, 2014
Washington, DC - Since its inception, the National Council on Disability (NCD) has reported on the status of people with disabilities in the United States of America. The 2014 review of National Disability Policy: A Progress Report continues that tradition, fulfilling our statutory mandate with added significance this year as we celebrate our 30th anniversary as an independent federal agency. NCD was first established in 1978 as a small advisory Council within the Department of Education and in 1984 transitioned to its current status as a federal agency.

As we’ve done with previous reports, the 2014 edition details the status of people with disabilities from across the nation, providing policymakers, advocates and other stakeholders with an overview of the progress the United States has made promoting and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities. The report also identifies opportunities to promote public policies that contribute to a more inclusive environment.

Specifically, this year NCD focuses on seven key areas: the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD), employment access and inclusion, subminimum wage, education outcomes, Medicaid managed care, mental health care, and data trends in disability policy.

“With our 2014 Progress Report, NCD acknowledges the cultural context of the past while setting a vision for the future that is grounded in high expectations for both people with disabilities and the policymakers who are responsible for shaping an inclusive society,” said Councilmember Janice Lehrer-Stein.

Added NCD’s Lynnae Ruttledge, “With the vote on ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities pending in the Senate and the United States celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 2015, NCD urges Congress, the White House, and other decision makers to implement the recommendations made in this report and to champion policies and laws that include and involve all Americans as equals.”

Sampling of NCD’s Recommendations:
-- On the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): The full Senate should consider, vote on, and pass the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) when it reconvenes in the fall of 2014. Ratification will enable the United States to resume its role as a key leader in international conversations on disability rights and contribute to a global society that is inclusive of people with disabilities.

-- Paying disabled workers a fair wage: The United States Department of Labor (DOL) should adopt and implement NCD’s proposal as reflected in the NCD’s 2012 Report on Subminimum Wage and Supported Employment to phase out 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which allows employers to pay people with disabilities wages below the federal minimum wage in reference to people with disabilities.

-- Medicaid managed care: States should ensure that any population that has its Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) system placed into managed care has the corresponding institutional benefit placed within the same managed care framework, offering an opportunity to reduce institutional placement and avoid adverse incentives for the Managed Care Organization (MCO).

To read a full copy of NCD’s 2014 Progress Report, including key findings, recommendations and objectives, go to: http://www.ncd.gov/progress_reports/10312014

2015 NFB WRITERS’ DIVISION WRITING CONTEST
The annual youth and adult writing contests sponsored by the NFB Writers’ Division will open January 1st and close April 1st.

NEW THIS YEAR: 2015, being the Federation’s 75th birthday, the contest will for the first time ever, have a required theme. All submissions will need to somehow incorporate the theme of 75. It does not have to be necessarily about the anniversary of NFB. It could just be the number 75, or perhaps the diamond anniversary, or 75 steps to your destination, or even 75 balloons. Thinking of past entries, 75 aliens would work. Seriously, let your imagination take over. Write the piece you want, just remember to include the theme of 75; this is inspired by the 75 years of the great work that has been happening within, and because of the National Federation of the Blind.

Adult contests, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and stories for youth are open to all entrants eighteen and over.

The youth writing contest, poetry and fiction, are to promote Braille literacy and excellence in writing. The contest is divided into three groups, determined by grade level – elementary, middle, and high school.

Prizes for contest winners range up to $100 for adult categories, and up to $30 for youth.

All contest winners will be announced the first week in July, at the Writers’ Division business meeting during the NFB national convention, held in Orlando, Florida. In addition, a list of winners will appear on our website, http://writers.nfb.org

All winners from both, the adult and youth contests will be considered for publication in our Division’s magazine, Slate & Style.

For additional contest details and submission guidelines, go to our website,

What every location asks about micro markets
Joe Hessling, 365 Retail Markets, shares the top five questions all locations ask about micro markets and how micro market operators can best respond.

Q: How do I know my employees’ credit cards are safe?
A: Any good micro market technology provider will be Payment Card Industry (PCI) certified, which we are, meaning that we are examined by the PCI standards council in order to ensure the credit card information is maintained in a secure environment.

Q: What stops people from stealing?
A: Most people are honest and theft from micro markets is reported to be less than the national retail average. However, if it becomes a problem (usually over 3 percent), we can always re-install vending machines or develop a subsidy model to cover the losses.

Q: Our company doesn’t want you on our corporate network, what are my options?
A: There are thousands of payment centers operating safely on corporate networks around the world. If you are certain being on the corporate network is not an option, we can bring a digital subscriber line (DSL) or equivalent into the building. As a last resort, we can purchase a mobile air card and cradlepoint router to get internet via cellular technology.

Q: Our company has a corporate wellness guideline that we would like you to help us with, what can you offer?
A: We can offer many promotional ways to price healthy items in a subsidized manner and present you with an invoice for the difference each month, the payment center reporting makes that very easy for us. Also, we can offer reports on the popularity of items you would like us to carry that fit the profile.

Q: We currently receive commissions from our vending and you are not offering us a commission, why should make the change?
A: This is a service based model that we usually charge customers for. The value and benefit to your employees far exceeds any commissions our company could ever provide.

Event Details:
Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Cashless is a "must have" in today’s market due to customer demand and a competitive business climate. Your customers are carrying less cash; everyone seems to have a smartphone. You want to figure out how to charge more and adjust pricing on the fly. So what is not having a cashless or mobile payment solution costing you?

Industry research shows that over 1 billion cashless transactions currently take place in the US and this will increase 11-16% over the next several years. According to Vending Times, 27% of total workplace market sales are cashless, a 62% increase from 2 years ago. On average, consumers pay 30% more with cashless alternatives. By not embracing cashless options, are you leaving money on the table?

Join us and our guests, David Weinshel, Sales Director at Visa and Michael Cordaro, VP of Operations at CRH Catering, for a 45-minute discussion on cashless and mobile payments. You’ll gain a greater understanding of:
