With the ride share companies, working with drivers has been an
experience of developing new skills and access strategies. It reminds
me of working with sighted readers before accessible technology. ride
share services often charge significantly less than taxi companies.
NFB leaders have worked with a few of these companies and are suing
one.

Uber has a unique program in the Chicago area. When end users go into
the settings area on the Uber iPhone app and enter the code chiaccess
they will find two additional selections: Uber access and Uber
Assist. Uber Access offers wheelchair accessible vehicles. Uber
Assist has drivers specifically trained on issues of disability and
welcome passengers with disabilities. These drivers can fold
wheelchairs and store them in their trunk, know how to interact with
guide dogs and know how to help a blind rider connect with them and
assist them to the car door. Riders with disabilities will find it
helpful to call their driver once the ride is scheduled and inform him
of their needs to make shure things go smoothly.
