IDHS Welcomes New Acting Secretary

Gregory M. Bassi is the Acting Secretary and General Counsel for the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). In Acting Secretary Bassi’s most recent experience, he served as a litigation attorney at Barnes & Thornburg, LLP and an earlier role at Winston & Strawn, LLP in Chicago that included work with government relations. Acting Secretary Bassi also served in positions with the federal courts and the U.S. Department of Justice.  His volunteer experience includes service as an Officer of the Marillac St. Vincent Family Services Associate Board, a non-profit organization that provides services in Chicago for child care and early childhood education, after-school programs, services to isolated seniors, programs for pregnant and parenting teens, and provides outreach to at-risk families and individuals. He also served as Co-Chair of the Holy Angels School Tutoring Program that provides tutoring services to low-income elementary school students on the South Side of Chicago. Acting Secretary Bassi holds a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Acting Secretary Bassi will serve until such time Governor Rauner appoints a permanent secretary.
