Blind chef ready to open new restaurant in Lincoln Park

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

To taste the savory sensations of chef Laura Martinez's culinary creations, you'd notice a lot of things: The flavor, the creativity, and the skill.

What you wouldn't notice is that these creations were meticulously crafted by someone who will never see them.

Chef Laura is blind. But, as she prepares to open her first restaurant, she's ready to take the culinary world by storm.

Welcome to La Diosa.

Laura Martinez has been blind for as long as she can remember. As an infant, she was diagnosed with retinal blastoma – a cancer of the eyes.

Doctors were forced to remove one eye, while the chemotherapy treatments ruined her vision in the other.

But that never slowed her town. With the help of her mother, she began her destiny of kitchen creations. She went on to attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts here in Chicago. And eventually, received a high profile job offer from the late Charlie Trotter.

But now, it's her time.

She's opening her first restaurant in Lincoln Park – La Diosa, Spanish for “the goddess.”

Joined behind the counter by her husband and her mother, chef Laura is making a grand entrance. She's even snagged the attention of another blind chef – Masterchef winner Christine Ha, who blogged about Laura's story last year:

But this is just the beginning, an appetizer if you will.

Because Laura has big plans and bigger dreams – and the main course is soon to come.
