Good advice, Kelly, specifically the comment about being aware of
employment options at the end of school.

Zack,

I believe cap has retired from NIU. the O and M teacher training at NIU or
other similar schools like Western Michigan or Boston college is for sighted
people based on a curriculum approved by the Acadamy.
the Academy will not certify blind peple to be O and M instructors and many
employers require this certification. The Blindness Board will certify
blind people to be travel teachers though. Before committing yourself to a
training program, consider the employment prospects of blind travel teachers
and the employers open to them and the accepted qualifications, which may be
different from sighted instructors.

I live in Chicago and am a 1989 graduate of NIU. I understand the school
now has bus service from a Metra train station at the end of one of the rail
lines directly to the NIU campus. I work near the Greyhound station in
Chicago, which has regular bus service to DeKalb.
If you would like some familiarization in getting through the airport to the
Orange line to the Metra station or the Greyhound station, let me know. I
have lived in Chicago for more than 25 years and am highly familiar with all
the transportation options and use them regularly.

Kelly
