[il-talk] Proving your blindness

I find that usually when people accuse me of trying to prove myself it's
because I'm insisting on doing something that makes them uncomfortable, even
something as simple as carrying my own plate in a buffet line or hanging up
my own coat at a party. If we go about living our lives with anything like
autonomy, it is bound to trouble the folks who are only comfortable when
we're sitting still. When Erik Weihenmayer climbed Mount Everest, was he
trying to prove that he was capable as a blind person? Then what was Sir
Edmund Hilary's motivation?

Let me say it a different way. I'm sure along the line, you've all been told
by someone that you spend a lot of time trying to prove yourself because of
your blindness. I tend to react negatively when I hear this statement. And
I'm wondering how others may react, positively or negatively? Do you ever
feel like proving yourself or that you can do things gets in the way of
living your life for being yourself? Thoughts? This could start a good
discussion.
