As you may have heard, Illinois lawmakers have proposed a penny-per-ounce tax on beverages such as sodas, juice drinks, teas and sports drinks. The tax will even be applied to drink powders and restaurant fountain drinks. 

This penny-per-ounce beverage tax will cost Illinoisans $1.44 for every twelve-pack and 68¢ for every two-liter. A price of a two-liter beverage would increase by nearly 70%! 

If you live in Cook County, this will double the beverage tax that was just passed there. That means if this tax passes, people in Cook County will pay a beverage tax of $2.88 for every twelve-pack and $1.36 for every two-liter, on top of sales taxes. 

On Tuesday, January 24, there will be a hearing in Springfield to discuss the beverage tax bill. You can tell lawmakers you oppose the bill by submitting a witness slip. All witness slips will be read into the record, allowing committee members to hear that you oppose the bill before they vote. Filling out a witness slip takes less than five minutes, but could have a huge effect on the committee's decision.
