New England Patriots Honor NBP Volunteer
One of NBP's longtime volunteers, Janet Ulwick-Sacca, was recently recognized by the New England Patriots as a recipient of the Myra Kraft Community MVP Award. Janet won the award in recognition of her years of work as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, and her volunteer contributions, including her work as an advisor to the Great Expectations and Touch of Genius programs. Janet's outstanding volunteerism won her a $10,000 grant for NBP from the Patriots Foundation.
At our Annual Meeting on June 20th, Janet received yet another honor--we named her the recipient of our 2017 Individual Volunteer Award. We also presented Ernst & Young with our Corporate Volunteer Award for their work in helping NBP with projects ranging from book production to new fundraisers.
Other highlights from the Annual Meeting included VP of Production Jackie Sheridan's presentation on the legacy of the Princeton Braillists' tactile graphics and the changing of the guard from outgoing Board Chair H. Clifford Watkin to incoming Chair Nick Racheotes

Haben Girma honored by Canadian Prime Minister
Friend of NBP Haben Girma made a visit to Ottawa, Canada this month, and received a special letter from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau--a letter in print-braille format! "Because he used transparent braille paper over a print page, both sighted and blind individuals can read the letter," Haben remarked Trudeau's letter is the first braille letter ever written by a sitting Canadian Prime Minister, making this a truly historic moment for braille.

Successful Fight for Accessibility in Perth!
An Australian mother recently achieved her quest to obtain braille education for her legally blind 12-year-old daughter. After being told that braille was unnecessary for her daughter, the mother began to teach her braille herself, and set up online braille lessons with an outside teacher. Now, however, the school district has recognized the importance of braille for this talented young reader. Read the full story here.
