Dear Leighton and Trevor,

In January Leighton Hutch met with members of the National Federation of the Blind of Illinois regarding our legislative agenda. We sincerely appreciate your time. Since that meeting, multiple e-mails were sent and telephone messages were left to request Congresswoman Cheri Bustos’ position on HR 1734, Access Technology Affordability Act and HR 1772, Accessible Instructional Materials in Higher Education.
Constituents were told that no follow-up appointments could be made for months so we simply asked for the Congresswoman’s position on legislation of vital concern to the blind of Illinois. We have received no answer as to the plans for either bill to date. As you know, we are asking for co-sponsors. We understand that Congress is busy but ten other members of the Illinois delegation are already on these bills. We are gravely disappointed that the telephone calls and e-mails of our members who live and work in Illinois Congressional district 17 are resulting in no response and we can only assume being ignored. After much consideration, and reluctantly, we plan to contact the local press. The blind of Illinois deserve a response from our representatives.

We value the time and effort that our members put forth in making telephone calls, sending e-mails and requesting in-district appointments. Therefore, we have copied the National Federation of the Blind of Illinois members on this e-mail to demonstrate our appreciation for their dedication and to inform the members of the National Federation of the Blind of Illinois with relation to the responsiveness of Congresswoman Bustos’ office.

We genuinely desire the answer to our questions but our members would not be served if we continued the status quo. So, we ask once more for notification of the Congresswoman’s plans in relation to the above mentioned bills. If we receive no communications, we are left with no option except to contact the press to let people know that an important constituency after many attempts finds it self without an effective means to petition government and discover where a member of the Congress stands on issues.

Respectfully,

Marilyn Green

Dear Trevor,

In January, Leighton Huch met with members of the National Federation of the Blind of Illinois regarding our 2018 legislative agenda. We are pleased to report that since that meeting multiple members of the Illinois Congress have co-sponsored our legislative items.

Mike Quigley and Janice Schakowsky were the first members of the Illinois Congress to co-sponsor HR 1772, Accessible Instructional Materials in Higher Education and HR 1734, Access Technology Affordability Act. Most recently Bobby Rush, Danny Davis, Luis Gutierrez and Robyn Kelly have co-sponsored these two pieces of legislation that are supported by the blind of Illinois. We would like to know if Congresswoman Bustos will continue to support blind residents of Illinois by co-sponsoring these bills.

For your convenience, fact sheets and supplemental materials are attached to this e-mail and we are available for you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. My cell phone number is 312-343-8396.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Green
