Linda,

This might be a really interesting thing for you to do. Don't be afraid to share your story.

Hi Bob,
What a wonderful Blog about learning Braille!
I think it's important for all blind people to learn Braille. Especially the young kids and teenagers!
As you all know, I learned Braille later in Life, and like Bob said his teacher said; you have to read every day to get better!
I'm glad we still have the ABLE, now called LIFE Group still going!
Learning Braille, for me, was the best thing I could of done after losing my sight!
Linda

Below is the second article I’ve written recently at the request of our NFB national center. Both articles have had the requested angle of someone learning Braille as a senior. I never thought it was that big a deal when I had to learn contracted Braille while being a student at BLIND, Inc., while being a senior during all that. Learning Grade 2 Braille was simply a requirement if I wanted to graduate from the training center. I still don’t think learning Braille as a senior is that extraordinary, but writing this article was. I like to write, particularly short stories, and consider it sort of a hobby. So I agreed to write this article, the challenge here being the 800-word limit I was given. If I’d been able to tell the story the way I would have liked, that is giving a more complete relating of the story, it would have been more like 2000 or 3000 words. Trying to tell the story, completely while still being interesting, in 800 words was really a difficult thing for me. But anyway, below is what I wrote for the NFB blog.

Hi Bob,

Happy to report that your blog post is now up!

Here’s the link:

https://www.nfb.org/blog/braille-and-me

It is also featured on the NFB homepage and also on our Resources page. We will also be promoting it on social media soon. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you again for doing this for us, and for submitting such a wonderful piece! I think it will be great for other people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond to read. Plus, your Washington Seminar example fits in well with our message that Braille will never be obsolete. Thank you!

Hi Bob,

I hope you are doing well. Your blog has not been published yet, I’m so sorry. We have it scheduled for Monday, April 6 now because we had a few COVID-19 related posts that we needed to publish urgently. I will send you the link as soon as yours is up!

And yes, work is still happening! Most of us are working from home for the time being. I’m sure you agree – we all hope this is over very soon.

Hi Alyssa

I’m not quite in the loop when it comes to the status of the national center, i.e., if work continues to go on in some fashion. My question is: did my article get into the NFB blog? If so, just to show more ignorance, how do I access it?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Alyssa

See attached for my blog article.

Note: I used the first name of my Braille instructor, Melody, but deliberately didn’t use her last name. Also, she left BLIND, Inc. some years ago. I’m hoping all that will allow you to use her name as it brings the article to life for me.

Thanks again for inviting me to write this, and if it isn’t what you want, let me know,

Bob
