[IL-Talk] Mediacom Audio Description

Pat,

There are several moving pieces that need to be in place for audio description to work properly. First, the show Ginny wants to watch needs to be described on the network that airs it. Second, the TV provider (in this case, Mediacom) must pass through the audio description to its subscribers.

Finally, the appropriate audio track must be enabled through the Mediacom set-top box. It may be labeled “audio description” or “Spanish” (most channels use the Spanish audio track to deliver AD). I personally have no experience with Mediacom, but for most cable/satellite boxes, there is no dedicated button on the remote to turn on audio description. Instead, you have to enable it through the box menus. Most modern boxes now have built-in screen readers, because the 21st-Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act requires them to be accessible.

ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, as well as most non-broadcast networks carrying AD, also post AD schedules on their websites.

   Ginny, a blind friend, has recently got set up with Mediacom with Audio
Description, but she hasn't yet discovered an audio described program or
channel.
    Is there something more than pressing the button for audio description
on the remote to access it?
    Is there a listing of audio described programs that she can find? Ginny
has recently got on Newsline in case the audio description information is
available there.
