Good Afternoon,
As the announcement states, this is our very first meeting as a Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Over time, we will address many topics. We in the federation are looking to work collaboratively and constructively on issues of diversity and inclusion relating to blindness. The invitation to this meeting is open to all if they have an interest in making change for the better.
I know both Shawn Calloway and Rosy Carranza have been working on many diversity and inclusion initiatives within our organization.
As reflected in our Code of Conduct, NFB.org, we are striving to create a welcoming environment among our members, guest, friends and nonmembers.

Thank you for sharing the meeting information.
Is there any an agenda item about changing from certain racist/sexist terminology? I had previously sent a request to Shawn Callaway and Rosy Carranza (leads of the NFB Diversity & Inclusion Committee) as well as Chris Danielson for NFB to change from using certain words that are deemed racist and sexist. Unfortunately, it has been almost 2 months without any commitment to change.
Here is a little background. This started as a request within the web list. Unfortunately, some of the responses felt like a MAGA rally response. For those who are not aware, there are many words in tech that are deemed racist/sexist by many. For example, "master" and "slave" are industry terms for main vs dependent servers, whitelist being safe/good and blacklist being dangerous, whitehat hacking is ethical where blackhat is evil, etc. And terms like "master" in webmaster, etc. are skewed male and reflects racial superiority but it is just as easy to use web administrator which is neutral yet descriptive. Many companies especially technology companies have made the public commitment to change away from racist/sexist terminology in light of greater anti-racist and me-two awareness. So far, NFB has not made any changes or a commitment to making the change.
Would the Illinois chapter be interested in discussing this? Or does the IL chapter also feel that change is not needed?
Thanks in advance for considering it.
