It is important to distinguish between electric scooters people
purchase and electric scooter rentals. What has been popular has been
scooter rentals, a ride on which cost about the same as a full transit
fare. These cheap rentals have been subsidized by billions of dollars
in venture capital. With Covid and the widespread wealth destruction,
it is questionable whether companies will still be interested in
deploying thousands of scooters at such low rates. If rental prices
reflected the full cost of the enterprise, it is questionable whether
electric scooters would be as popular. I believe they will turn into
novelty vehicles like mopeds.
The article claims scooters are safer, but it does not say with what
it is comparing. Safety studies on electric scooters have not
compared them to bicycles, electric bicycles, mopeds, and automobiles.
It is a fake claim.
During the Covid crisis, one of the products that is completely sold
out is bicycles. People recognize the value of bikes rather than
scooters when they have to put real money on the table for a
transportation decision.
