Hi all,

I'm sharing this in case any Braille readers are interested. This is an interesting device and sells for about the same price as a 40-cell display. I think right now the only U.S. distributor is A T Guys but I could be wrong.

Dan

Subject: Canute production line in Bristol & NFB 2021

Dear subscriber

Bristol Braille Technology virtually attended the 2021 National Federation of the Blind convention earlier this month. Along with hearing about all the excellent work the Federation has been doing over the past year, we made an announcement about the Canute 360 at the NFB In Computer Science meeting:

In 2019 National Federation of the Blind Convention BBT was honoured to receive the Dr Jacob Bolotin Award for Canute 360, the first affordable multiline Braille display.

In 2020 the American Action Fund supported Canute 360 once again with a substantial grant to get it back into production after the turbulence of the pandemic. We cannot emphasise enough how important this was to our mission of making multi-line refreshable Braille available and affordable.

Now, after a year's hiatus, we are delighted to be announcing that the Canute 360 is back in production in Bristol, England. We have moved production in-house, to our expanded workshop on Philip Street.

This was necessary to better cope with the exceptional and increasingly complex challenge of manufacturing during this pandemic; in particular relating the chronic shortages of chips, other components, and mandatory self-isolation orders. Now we have made this change we have production lines set up and running, sub-assemblies being produced, and are looking forward to producing finished Canutes once again!

We have also made great strides in the last six months with using the Canute with desktop productivity software. We are experimenting with how best to use BRLTTY's support for the Canute to bring dynamically changing spreadsheets direct from your PC to your Canute, along with other exciting possibilities afforded by BRLTTY support. It's too early to release anything, but when we do it will be for all Canute owners, old and new.

We wanted to make this announcement first at the convention because this has only been possible with the exceptional support and encouragement afforded to BBT by President Riccobono, the AAF board, the Dr Jacob Bolotin Award Committee, and many other Federationists.

Thank you

Ed, Charlie and the whole team at BBT
