The Disability Cultural Center is Remote & Here to Connect!

Hello everyone! We hope your Spring semester is off to a great start.

At the beginning of the year, the Disability Cultural Center decided to use <https://uic.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5c4de191ea537f2fdff0902a6&id=1d4c1cb4ac&e=61fbdb12cf> data about hospital stress in Cook County to determine whether we'd have our Lounge open or not.

Based on these metrics, and out of care for our communities, we are working remotely, and our Lounge is closed.

We're here to connect, and we have a lot of exciting things coming up this semester! Don't hesitate to get in touch at dcc at uic.edu or 312-355-7050. On January 24, classes will resume on campus. If you are required to be on campus and are having trouble finding a safe space to be, we'd like to know. If you are having trouble accessing N95 or KN95 masks, please also let us know. (And check out the community care effort ChiMasks under Resources & Opportunities! Support them if you can.)

In solidarity,
The DCC Staff

Communities of sick and disabled folks have been meeting online for years–on Skype, Zoom, Tumblr, Twitter, and social media spaces. The pandemic’s huge shift in how we are usually social has been tricky for many of us to navigate, but this series is all about framing virtual socializing as survival strategies with a long track record of giving joy, care, and connection.

Want to meet other people? Join us for an informal gathering to meet one another & build disability community!Join us for an informal gathering to meet one another & build disability community!

DCC Meet-Ups are intentional spaces for people who identify as disabled or are exploring their relationship to disability. We define disability and disability experience broadly to include any kind of body or mind that doesn’t fit into cultural norms about what a bodymind should be and do. This can include physical disabilities, sensory disabilities, psychological and/or mental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, chronic illness, chronic pain; it can include Crohn’s, dyslexia, neurodiversity, madness, et cetera. And we welcome those in our community who think they may have a disability but aren’t sure. Whether you have an official diagnosis or not, this space is yours.

*	Internship stipend: $500

KN95 or N95 mask use best practices
(adapted from an article on the WHO [world health organization] website)

-Each mask should only be used for up to 8 hours total.
-Minimize the number of times that you take your mask off and on.
-If you touch the inside of your mask it is no longer effective or able to be clean/reused.
-If you sneeze, cough, sweat, or speak for any prolonged amount of time while wearing your mask, it is not able to be cleaned or reused.
-If you wear your mask inside a high-risk healthcare setting, or near someone who is infected with Covid, it should be disposed of.
-Masks that have not been compromised at all can be cleaned by keeping them in a paper bag or a clean dry place for four days, and they should only be reused one time.]

HIVES 2021-22 CFT: Call for Things (Art, Poetry, Prose, You Tell Us!)
Submissions Due February 10th for print and digital release Spring 2022 (tentative).

Submit your art, poetry, audio, short fiction, commentary, and/or hybrid creative media via email at behivesbuzz at gmail.com. HIVES is interested in all forms of multimodal, multimedia submission-Things.

The HIVES Research Workshop and Speaker Series on disability, race, and performance is creating the second issue of the digital & print Buzz-Zine! We welcome submissions that reimagine practices of community and kinship and think through the ways forces of globalization and coloniality interact with disability, race, and performance. In this Call for Things, we take up Jina B. Kim’s insistence from “Toward a Crip-of-Color Critique” “to recognize disablement and racism as inextricably entangled, and to enact intellectual practices… that honor disabled embodiment and history.” In this practice, we seek submissions that resist, reimagine, and re-shape conversations on race, disability, and their overlaps through performance or through practices of refusal. In Black Madness::Mad Blackness, Therí A. Pickens notes how “disability functions as a social structure that by virtue of ableist reliance on pity and sympathy determines who gets to belong to the category of disabled and whose experience of illness can be validated in the public sphere” (Pickens 9). This Call for Things seeks works that theorize and practice forms of revolt against social structures that hierarchize disability. Following Kim and Pickens, the Buzz-Zine hopes to share how artists, activists, and scholars take up crip methodologies as necessary practices of remaking. These themes should serve as a jumping/limping-off point for art, poetry, audio, short fiction, commentary, and/or hybrid creative media rather than as restrictions.

In the interest of building the HIVES community, we are seeking contributions for a short run (100 issues) paper-print zine that will also be made available via .pdf on the HIVES website. While we do not have a tremendous budget, we will be able to pay $25 for each of the pieces selected for publication. Submissions may be previously published (if so, please provide us with the necessary information to cite where). When submitting, include a brief biographical statement (1-2 sentences) that will accompany the work.

Historically, zines have been a cheap format to spread ideas and community. Early zines were a way for fans of science fiction to rank favorite stories, to propagate fan theories, and to form social groups; however, they sometimes served gatekeeping functions and limited participation in sf communities, upholding some (white, male) voices and erasing others. In the decades since, zines have been used to make space for people whose ideas and voices have been suppressed within their subcultures (e.g. Riot Grrrl zines that pushed back against the “male-driven punk world of the past”). Buzz-Zine seeks to make space for scholarship/poetics/art that challenge notions of the boundaries and definitions of each of these genres while reimagining accessibility and community.

Through submission of creative works you are agreeing to grant HIVES all necessary rights and permission as the sole author to publish your work in the zine. If selected, the zine will be made publishable through short-run paper format and also as PDF on <https://uic.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5c4de191ea537f2fdff0902a6&id=9b70eab6a4&e=61fbdb12cf> behives.org. All rights revert back to the author after publication.

Notes on formatting: Art contributions should be formatted for printing on a 5.5 X 8.5 in (140 x 216 mm) sheet, with a 3mm bleed and 8mm margins left and right. Please submit images as .png or .jpg files with as high of quality as possible. Poems should be up to 21 lines (1 page) or less than 44 lines (2 pages). Short fiction and commentary should be approximately 500 words or less. If you have any formatting and/or submission questions, please reach out to HIVES via behivesbuzz at gmail.com.
