In support of the February 24, 2022, White House announcement on improving at-home test accessibility for individuals with disabilities and older adults, Ellume has worked with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) RADx initiative and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to ensure ECHT is accessible to users who are blind or have low vision.

“Ellume is incredibly proud to help make at-home COVID testing more accessible. For too long, Americans who are blind or have low vision have struggled to take advantage of this vital tool in the pandemic,” said Dr. Sean Parsons, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ellume. “From the outset, we designed our test with consumers in mind, featuring audio step-by-step instructions and digitally generated results. In collaboration with the National Federation of the Blind, we are working to make our product the most accessible at-home test on the market. We support the White House program to make our digital tests readily available for the blind or low vision community.”

“When we first assessed the Ellume test kit months ago we were surprised to find a high degree of accessibility despite a few notable barriers. We thank Ellume for its thoughtful design and for working with us to further improve the nonvisual access of their COVID tests. While there are more improvements needed in the government program, we can all be proud of the results from our COVID testing advocacy efforts that have successfully created changes in the program leading to the ability of blind Americans to receive twelve free tests per order," said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. "By working together, we have forever enhanced the accessibility of at-home-testing products for blind Americans, and we are excited for our continued collaboration."

The Ellume COVID-19 Home Test is the only available antigen test being provided through the free distribution program that is sufficiently accessible to users who are blind or have low vision, according to the NFB. The test and accompanying app offer a range of bespoke features that ensure a more user-friendly experience.

*	The ECHT and app, coupled with a smartphone screen reader, enables users who are blind or have low vision to navigate the test by guiding them through each step of the testing process, minimizing human error and providing enhanced safety;
*	Using Bluetooth® connectivity, the ECHT automatically generates a fully digital result displayed in words on a user’s smartphone which can be read using screen reader functionality, without the need for visual test lines to be interpreted, or photos to be taken;
*	Fully digital results can be easily shared with others such as healthcare providers, employers, or family;
*	Additional healthcare information and a direct link to customer support are provided to the user after testing is complete, to further support their testing experience;
*	ECHT components are larger and free-standing, without the need to be housed in the carton or packaging when performing the test;
*	User-designed components make handling components more manageable, and Ellume’s patented Dropper system makes combining the sample and Processing Fluid easy-to-use, and
*	Ellume’s patented swab provides confidence in swab depth for adults and children, enhancing the likelihood of sufficient sample collection.

Ellume updated all online labeling to be fully compatible with screen reader functionality, utilizing Adobe Accessibility tools, the industry leader in developing online functions for the people who are blind or have low vision. Ellume reviewed these updates in collaboration with the NFB to ensure the documents not only pass the testing process with Adobe but are functional for real-world usage.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <about:blank%23_ftn1> [1],one in four adults in the United States has a disability, with 4.6% of these individuals experiencing vision disability with blindness or serious difficulty seeing even when wearing glasses. Ellume’s 215,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Frederick, Maryland will serve the home test needs of this population, while continuing to accelerate innovation in developing solutions for future public health needs.

The development and supply of Ellume COVID-19 Home Tests has been funded in part by the NIH RADx initiative with US federal funds from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institutes of Health, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. 75N92020C00034 and the Department of Defense, under Contract No. W911NF2190003.

The Ellume COVID-19 Home Test

In developing the Ellume COVID-19 Home Test (ECHT), Ellume took a different approach than many other antigen detection products on the market – one that provides a result without the cost, complexity and accessibility issues of a laboratory-based molecular (PCR) test. The ECHT is the only rapid home antigen test that uses fluorescent technology, which has previously been used exclusively by healthcare professionals. The ECHT was the first rapid home antigen test to receive an EUA and is authorized for use in individuals with or without symptoms. The test's swab enables deeper sample collection, offering the best compromise between sample quality and patient comfort. The test's app guides the user through the test steps and displays the results in words within 15 minutes enabling easy result interpretation. The test also includes a sample alert system to identify if an insufficient sample was collected which minimizes the risk of false negative results. The ECHT was awarded a <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FRAY_CmZMB1IjRwwLiNAsvX%3Fdomain%3Daus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com&data=05%7C01%7Cpchang%40nfb.org%7Cf1ea6b644f19416a15ea08da65d51ee0%7C538f3d4b739545cf93fa8dfc2b4a7f62%7C1%7C0%7C637934263335959521%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=nMVIk8%2BO7mW7B1h5e2eH%2Bwl3X1Wh2uXILvSES%2BSDLa4%3D&reserved=0> TIME Best Inventions of 2021 award and a <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FEltiCn5ND2f7600ph0v9ES%3Fdomain%3Daus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com&data=05%7C01%7Cpchang%40nfb.org%7Cf1ea6b644f19416a15ea08da65d51ee0%7C538f3d4b739545cf93fa8dfc2b4a7f62%7C1%7C0%7C637934263335959521%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=gk3AmE2VVzUvbupQ%2Ff%2F4xvjK15oseqw0JyFr5G25RhI%3D&reserved=0> Popular Science Best of What's New for 2021 award.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your patience and follow up with the release. Attached is the updated press release with our approved quote and minor edits, overview below:

*	Recommend the term collaboration in the Ellume quote
*	Adjusted the sentence after our quote to include that this is the only accessible test offered in the distribution program to be more accurate
*	Adjusted the details on how to order the tests because the covid.gov/tests <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FcfNrCkROzYcOqVV3hJrPFJ%3Fdomain%3Dcovid.gov&data=05%7C01%7Cpchang%40nfb.org%7Cf1ea6b644f19416a15ea08da65d51ee0%7C538f3d4b739545cf93fa8dfc2b4a7f62%7C1%7C0%7C637934263335959521%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=KqAsnmDFnhkECYLV6GFMktcjxGpc%2BxSY5iXTkJXzRCQ%3D&reserved=0> link won’t automatically redirect to the accessible test form – if people go to covid.gov/tests <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FcfNrCkROzYcOqVV3hJrPFJ%3Fdomain%3Dcovid.gov&data=05%7C01%7Cpchang%40nfb.org%7Cf1ea6b644f19416a15ea08da65d51ee0%7C538f3d4b739545cf93fa8dfc2b4a7f62%7C1%7C0%7C637934263335959521%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=KqAsnmDFnhkECYLV6GFMktcjxGpc%2BxSY5iXTkJXzRCQ%3D&reserved=0> first then they would technically need to drill down through two additional links to get to the right form

Lastly, we are trying to determine if deafblind people can be included within the scope of users. That note is not included in the attached draft because we want to share the overall updated version to you for review. If I hear back regarding adding in deafblind users today, I’ll let you know as soon as possible – if that edit doesn’t make it into the release, then we can share it in our other communications if determined to be appropriate.

Let me know if you have questions. Thanks so much!

Dear Dan,

Our National Convention was a big success. We did have some covid breakout so were very stretched in NOLA. I forwarded your message to Stephanie and Chris Danielson with a subject line that makes it clear you are wanting a response. I hope that is helpful.

Hi Patti and Stephanie,

I hope your conference was a big success last week. I have not heard back from Stephanie last week on our press release so I have attached the latest version here. We would really appreciate a response as to whether NFB would like to provide a quote and if you request any changes to the release. HHS and DoD have reviewed/approved this release and it has been updated to reflect that individuals will receive 12 test with their order. We would prefer to send this release out tomorrow morning if possible. Feel free to call me with any concerns.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi NFB team,

Thank you again for a great introductory meeting yesterday. A few follow up items:

1.	Stephanie – please see Ellume’s draft press release attached for your review and comment. We have left a placeholder for a quote from NFB if desired. Please also let us know if you have additional language or tweaks to our language to ensure we are communicating to the target audience properly. We would appreciate feedback by COB tomorrow if possible as we intend to distribute by Tuesday, July 5.
2.	Patti – happy to set up a follow up call either July 14 or 15th to discuss partnership opportunities. Let me know some times that work for you those days.
3.	Matt and Karl – I understand from Amy Jezek that you both are already discussing technical/educational considerations for Ellume’s Customer Support team. Thank you!
4.	John – fully appreciate that the testing needs are taken care of for the conference. Let me know if you would like us to send a carton of 12 tests to New Orleans or the office in Baltimore for photo opportunities or to put on display to promote the free test initiative through the White House.

Best,

Dan

I have forwarded your question about the tests for our convention to John Berggren who will follow up. Either time is good for me. I do not know about the availability of others on this string. When you have a time, can you please send a calendar invitation or let me know and I can set up a Zoom meeting.

Hi Patti - Thanks for the quick response. I can meet for 30 minutes tomorrow at 10am or between 12:30-1:30pm. I completely understand about the conference however maybe we could provide our tests through the testing service that is administering the testing for the conference?

Stephanie – Nice to meet you. I will send you our PR that we are trying to issue tomorrow. Can you assess whether you would be interested in providing a quote?

I look forward to our introductory call tomorrow.

Thanks,

Dan

Dear Dan,

I am available to meet tomorrow after 10:00 ET. As to a role for our convention, I regret to say that our agenda and exhibit hall layout are already printed and Brailled so that sponsor and exhibitor opportunities are no longer available. There are lots of networking opportunities though. We also have many state conventions coming up in the Fall which we can also discuss, and we welcome a discussion around partnering generally. Since some of what you wish to talk about involves communications, I am looping in Stephanie Cascone, our Director of Communications and Marketing. I am also looping in Anil Lewis, our Executive Director of Blindness Initiatives, who is our lead regarding accessible testing.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Bart!

Hi Patti and team – it is nice to e-meet you and I would appreciate it if we could arrange a call Tuesday or Wednesday to talk about the following topics:

1.	NFB and Ellume’s mutual initiatives with the White House, ASPR and NIH’s RADx to improve accessibility for COVID-19 diagnostic tests
2.	NFB’s interest in providing a quote in Ellume’s upcoming press release to broadcast the availability of Ellume’s tests through the COVIDtest.gov website.
3.	Discuss a role for Ellume in the 2022 NFB conference
4.	Potential partnership opportunities

The Ellume team is excited to support the NFB community and continue to build on the product features that are making COVID-19 at-home testing more accessible.

Please let us know if you have availability this week.

Thanks,

Dan
