[IL-Talk] Security update from Apple with those who have an iPhone

Updating an iOS can seem to be a risky proposition but here are some steps a
person can take to make the process easier.

I recommend plugging in the phone before you start and leaving it unlocked.
When you perform updates, you might want to consider temporarily disabling
screen lock. Do an iCloud backup before you perform the update. That will
back up your apps and data if you have selected the option to backup your
data. Open settings and software update will be one of the first options you
encounter. If you don't see it, navigate to general, about, and you will
find software update located there. Double-tap the button and you will hear
VoiceOver ask for your passcode. Enter it, and the update will start. The
phone goes through a series of steps to update itself. It downloads and
verifies the software update. I find the download process is what takes the
longest. This may depend on your internet connection whether you are using a
mobile or wi-fi connection. The process will be slower for older phones. It
can also take a long time because everyone is trying to access the update
from the Apple website at the same time. When VoiceOver goes silent, that's
when the update is being performed. Chris told me that he sees a progress
bar move from left to right indicating the progress of the update. If
VoiceOver doesn't speak, don't panic. That means the update is in process.
If VoiceOver doesn't speak for about 15 minutes, the update may have failed.
I have never had an update fail in the 13 years I have had various models of
the iPhone. I recommend purchasing iCloud storage so you can restore a phone
from iCloud. Backing up or restoring a phone backup using a computer is a
challenge considering that iTunes has become inaccessible.

I wish Apple provided the same level of accessibility for software updates
as google. When updating an Android device, the TalkBack screenreader always
provides feedback until the phone restarts. This is just like Windows. The
main disadvantage to Android updates is that if there are multiple updates,
they need to be performed separately.

I have automatic updates turned off. I was able to do the update
successfully with no issues.
